I don't think it's related to breathing for me, at least it's not exhaling while shooting. I exhale and hold at that exhaled state, and then shoot within the next few seconds. If it doesn't happen by then, I'll take a long deep breath, exhale, and have another go. Perhaps I'll take a video of myself and see what I see in that.

Experimenting with different grips during dry fire drills this evening reproduced the left shift anytime the sides of the rifle were gripped. Resting the rifle across the left palm and hooking the right thumb around the comb gave best results. Live fire changes the dynamics but this looks like the beginning of an explanation.

It's as simple as keeping all the pressure going straight back.

I think I'll do a bit of experimenting later with some dryfiring. I'm taking a break right now from trying to get my brakes done on my car before I lose light. Stupid cars, hehe.

Understand very well Mary. I was going to shoot at another indoor range this coming year if we didn't fix our back stop, because of all the splatter we were getting. You only have one set of eyes and they are not to be messed with. The good news is after a lot of haggling we had our indoor range backstop redone so I won't have to look else where.

As measured by George Toney, the heat index on the firing line today was 114 and I shot a personal best 28 in Hunter, thanks to y'all, Kitty, Lanny Basham, and the Marines.

Y'all reminded me to go back and check the basics.

Kitty pointed out that there should be no tension in the forward arm, that it was just there to support the rifle and not to push in any way.

Lanny Basham ("With Winning in Mind") described the importance of having a program (a concept I understand) and running it every time.

The Marines taught me to breath in, get the sight picture above the target and then exhale until the target was centered in the sight picture.

Rainy Day Annie is an Anschutz 1712 FWT pieced together from Ed Kessey (the action), Kitty (a battered old McMillan FWT stock), Evelio (bedding, LOP), Northwest Hydroprint (paint and raindrop pattern) and a Leupold BR 24x40 from Byron, and I'm very sentimental about each piece. Because everything on her has a story and is (ahem) well seasoned, she usually stays safe at home, but everything else is broken or in process, so she came out to play and did a great job.

This is my first leg into AAA and I very much appreciate everyone's help.
