"Tactical Smallbore Silhouette" as fun match

How about having all 22 cal rifles in 2 open classes and allow 15 seconds for 5 shots? Class 1 - iron sights, Class 2 - all other sights. 15 seconds should keep the high-end bolt guns and high power scopes home. Probably would have to use the pistol targets.

As the idea stands now, we're already going to be using pistol targets and we'll be running it in parallel with our existing smallbore cowboy rifle silhouette matches. That means that we also have to use the same timing. Our range hosts lots of competitions and already only has one weekend a month that members can come out to shoot or do load development for all of the matches. We don't have room for any other match days. If we ran it as a separate match, I'd just have it be one of these options.

• 15-second load period and 60 seconds to shoot the five shots
• 15-second load period and 45 seconds to shoot the five shots (most likely)
• 60 seconds to load and shoot the five shots (would have to evaluate safety aspect of hurried loading)

In any of these cases, target setting would take so much longer than shooting that it might hamper the experience.

I agree with the Villager. Five shots..boring. Shooting at barn yard steel...more so. You will need bad guy type silhouettes to keep the younger crowd you seek interested.

That's too much of a departure from silhouette for me to be willing to run it or even help run it. I'm just brainstorming a different type of rifle classification for existing matches as a way to pull more people into our silhouette matches. As part of finishing up the renaissance of our club that was triggered by litigation by a neighbor, we're opening up the total membership limit somewhat and modernizing many aspects of how we run things. This is just part of that.

It's good to know that you think shooting "barn yard steel" is boring, though. Now I understand why you shoot a completely unsuitable 7-08 to try to make it more fun.

You misunderstood my meaning. I LOVE the animal targets. And the 7-08 is a purist round for the HP game. I am trying to look through the eyes of the video game generation of potential shooters. Nuff said about this from me.

I understood your meaning. I just try not to miss a chance to make fun of you and your arsenal of Remington 7-08s with Leupold 12X scopes.

OK guys - this is starting to sound like Cowboy Action Shooting with modern firearms. Make it too complicated and it will never happen - simple is best.

Jason I talked to two committee members at our state match several years ago about this same idea but make it a military smallbore rifle class. They have high power military rifle shoots in Va. It might open the sport to new shooters who would buy a 22lr ar15 but not a 22 bolt action.

Any military style semi-auto 22lr, non-magnifying optics allowed, maximum of 20 rounds, shoot all 10 targets at once in some ridiculously short time frame{10 seconds?}, pistol size targets, start with barrel held on the stand in front already loaded, buzzer start, buzzer stop.
That could be alot of fun.

Very Valid point on range commands and having such an event co-existing with the rest of the field .

A option we still stewing on is as follow:

Keeping Time frame Standard and making it a bit of a 3 gun Item for the x-box generation

Stage 1 Handgun Targets x10 chickens - shot with Pistol .
stage 2 Handgun Targets x10 Pigs - Shot with Open sight AR.
Stage 3 Rifle Tagets x5 Turkey's - Shot with Scoped rifle
Stage 4 Rifle Target x5 Rams - Shot with Scoped rifle.

Think this layout although complicated gives a real Tactical flavour to it - Option B is to start with the Scoped rifle and end with the Pistol.

In Mesa, Az I watched an airgun silhouette match - don't know if this was local rules or something standard with all clubs.

The shooter was timed - on the "fire" command the clock started and when the 40th target fell the clock stopped.
The shooter with the shortest time was winner - no limit to the number of shots fired.

The only limit I noticed was starting with an empty magazine and load it after the "fire" command. No mechanical loaders allowed.

Just an observation, but it looked like fun.
