1712 bore guide & cleaning rod

Gday Ladies and Gents, just a newcomer to steelchickens, what a great site and group.

I've just got myself a new Anschutz 1712 and would like to maintain and clean it the best way from the start, ive used proshot stainless rods and possum hollow boreguides in the past but have heard alot of people speak of these ANSCHUTZ match 54's having an offset bore and not all guides available being satisfactory. Would just like to have the input of any gunsmiths or people in the know in regards to this topic and which would be the best guide and rod for the 1712 ? Also is better sticking with DELRIN compared to ALUMINIUM for the guide ?

I wouldn't describe it as an offset bore, but if you look at the bottom of your bolt, you'll see a good portion has been removed toward the front. The bore guide must have a similar section removed. I have both an old wooden (60s) and a Delrin guide. Both work fine but the Delrin slides in easier. No idea if an aluminum guide is available for the 54.

I currently use a Dewey bore guide made for Anschutz 54 actions with a Tipton carbon fiber cleaning rod. If I were buying again, I'd probably buy a Possum Hollow number 62 guide instead of the Dewey. I'd definitely not change the cleaning rod, though.

I was thinking of the possum hollow # 62 jason but was also told the mwerks aluminium guide for the 54 repeater was good to, they also make the guide to suit the rod used, just wasn't sure on using aluminium. i currently use a proshot rod and curious if theres better. Opinions on both appreciated.

I have both Aluminum and Delrin bore guides and use Dewey steel rods. Big reason for the bore guide is to keep solvent out of the trigger. I am not convinced any save the rod bearing on the bore in a .22 Tell the truth smooth barrel like Anschutz needs so little cleaning any of the good rods are fine. I wipe with a few Balistol soaked patches and thats it, not over half a dozen strokes total.

All sorts of opinions about cleaning, mine is long as you get it clean less you rub better off you are.

Even with best cleaning equipment available it is possible to damage the bore of a gun through reckless cleaning practices, example; jags have a tendency to unscrew themselves in the bore through the rotation of the rifleing, retracting it back into the bore hard can damage the crown over time.
There are all kinds of little things like this that shouldn't be done, if you are not mechaniclly inclined exercise extreme caution when cleaning a 1800.00 rifle.
If unsure about the correct procedures leave the barrel alone with a rod, your probably better off useing a boresnake, even they require a little common sense though, pull it the same direction as the bullet travels, keep it off the floor, ect..ect http://www.midwayusa.com/product/260083 ... 22-caliber

Thanks Kevin, yeah i'm from down under mate. They are a nice rifle. No comps as yet but looking forward to it in the near future.

Anything new to add to this thread prior to my ordering some cleaning equipment for my 54s.....?

The better the ammunition you use the less you'll have to clean with one caveat, 22's foul more in cold weather, keep your ammunition warm if possible.

For my 1712 and 54.18 as well as my air rifles I use a simple patch worm for cleaning when I think about cleaning them. I know a few guys that never clean their .22 barrels and they still shoot just fine. The patch worm can take several passes but it is simple enough. I add a extra patch over the first one once it has been used to get a nice tight fit that seems to help get the last bits of fouling out.
