I am looking for 38-55 Winchester loads for 275 Grain Cast bullets. Preferably full case case loads. Looking get a velocity around 1500 -1700 fps (muzzle) for CLA shooting. Using a 1893 Marlin 26 inch barrel.

What suggestion do you have? Powders I am looking to use are, but willing to try others.

4198
4895
4320
4064
3031

Thank you

24 g of4895 works in my marlin. If you want to try 4227 14.5g is a good load

I shoot a bunch of them with 14.5 of 4227, produces Black Powder velocity about 1250 FPS Going fast with cast presents challenges, not impossible though. Gas checks are needed around 1500 FPS

I shot these 5 http://youtu.be/BkHUFVOaMBE with 20 grains of XMP5744 behind a 272 grain cast gas check. recoil is on the lighter side of moderate.

you mileage may vary.

I use that for turkeys and rams only, I have a trail boss load for chickens and pigs

Been shooting 18.5 grains of H4895 behind a 240 grain master cast bullet. Shot this load at the Oklahoma City Match last June and won the rifle match with it.

10 grs. of Unique 260-70 gr. cast with or without a gas check. They go 1250ish fps. They whack the rams well enough.I have shot bullets cast from Lee 379-250-RF,and bullets I bought from Hunters supply with that load.Another shooter has tried it with Lyman 375296.At one time I shot 19 grs. of 2400 at the rams@1600 fps or so.If you come across any IMR 4759 17 grs for 1375 fps is THE load.

I've not had much luck with 4227. Very position sensitive in the .38-55, at least it is for me.

Have you considered about 46 grs of 1.5 fg Swiss? Day in, day out, it is my most consistent load.

3031 is on my list to try. 4198 and 4895 have been better to me than most others, esp. the former, but black is where it's at for the most part.

Try this for position sensitive loads - http://pufflon.com/newfront.html Not for max or near-max loads.

If you want full case loads - you can't get any fuller than Trail Boss. I've been using 10 grains under a 255gr Big Lube bullet in my Legendary Frontiersman (sized .380). The maximum that will fit in my Starline cases, yet still have a slight air gap - Trail Boss should never be compressed.

Shot black for a full year out of this rifle, and had a lot of fun doing so, but when time got short due to work schedules the smokeless loads just go together faster.
