Got elk?

haha...we do!
I got home two hours ago, all stuff put away. Time for posting.
Did not see a critter nearly close enough yesterday for a shot. But today, bingo.

At 8:10 this morning I hit a nice young 2-3 year old cow. I first saw her at about 450 yards standing still in a sage patch. It was 12 degrees with a 10-12 mph left wind blowing. I was tempted to shoot from the sitting position holding into the guts, but hesitated. I would hate to miss or wound it. Suddenly it made a beeline....right towards me running up hill.

Sweet!!! At 150 yards it stopped cold facing me with only the shoulders on up showing from my position. I slowly stood, rifle shouldered and pointed. I put a .30 cal. 180 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip smack centered in the chest...silhouette style.

It dropped dead in it's tracks. We had a half mile drag up and down hills back to the truck. That might have been the last elk I shoot. This hunting thing is hard work.

The last few hundred yards was down hill and the critter sledded 100yds. down by itself.
There was no way Sara and I could lift it whole into the truck bed. Had to quarter it. My location is top secret, a friends ranch south of Milner, CO.
A few photos of the hunt.

That looks like one heck of a tasty freezer full of meat! Where did Sara and you get your full blaze orange jumpsuits? Holy moly, my retinas are sore.

Good shooting I can tell the taste test will be soon. To get critter into truck remove tailgate, set one end on ground and the other on bumper and use it as a ramp. Attach come -a-long to front of bed and other end to strap around neck and winch up. I have done many like this and it works great. So plan on next year and shoot it up hill from the truck. Also a couple milk jugs with water and one with a couple squirts of dish soap to clean up after words.

Trent, most of our stuff came from Cabelas over the years.
WHOA there yankee!!

That 92 F-150 is still show room pretty. No way my tailgate will be a meat pulling slab!

I do not want even a speck of blood on it.

Until last fall I always used a tilt bed snowmobile trailer with said come along. Worked great.

Bob, I had all four chained up on Saturday in another section. Was too lazy Sunday to mess with them, chains are not much fun. Yankee, I like your idea overall. Next year I will carry a half sheet or bigger of 3/4" plywood and have a 1/2" eyebolt at the inside front of the bed bottom.

If you were shooting a real gu the beast wouldn't have ran so far from the paved road.

Nice harvest. I am sure that will put a lot of meat in the freezer! I've always wanted to go hunt Elk before I get to old. Probably one of the few travel to hunt trips I would even want to take. We have no Elk here so that is out. And from what I understand a good guided trip is around $5000 on up. So maybe one day lol. Perhaps I can arrange a hunt trade for a gator lol.
Ummm aren't Elk supposed to have Antlers?

just kidding

Hey Toto....definition of a real gun:
Winchester Model 70 stainless push feed (new circa 1990) 24" .30 "ought six" topped with a Leupold 3.5-10x. Fed a diet of hand loaded Nosler 180 BT's and 56.0 grs. IMR4350. Twenty three cow elk would agree that it's the real deal.

Too scared to try that wimpy thing on a bull elk? Yeah, I don't blame you...

Correction...make that twenty one. Sara hit two with her equally as real Model 70 Featherweight .308 with a 150 Speer hot-cor stoked with 44.0 grs. H335, and 3-9x Leupold.
Jason, big bulls are no tougher than an average cow with a lethal hit. Put one where they live...the lungs.
