Hey all I have recently decided to get into silhouette shooting for my new hobby I want to start practicing and by next year start entering some comps but I got a few questions so any and all advice would be appreciated!
#1 Im still trying to choose which rifle I should get Im looking between the tikka t3 and the model 700 rem (not sure which version is the right one since I have seen like 6) or are there other rifles I might want to be looking at that are good in comp?
#2 whats are some good scopes I should be looking into? from what I have heard the scope is more important then the gun
#3 I live in Ny how active is the tri state area for comps. I will be more then willing to travel down to va, west va, all the way up to maine.. just curious
#4 Is there anything I should look into to prepare myself for these comps ?

1) Both rifles are good, you see more 700s probably because of price/availability in the US and certainly more parts readily available.
2) Scopes are personal choice, yes more important than a rifle, Leupold, Sightron offer lifetime warranties, Weaver T series is also good. I recommend variable power due to changing conditions at some ranges, and added flexibility. 9 to as high as 36 power are good combinations, i.e. 6-18..... Reticle again personal choice, as for dot size or plain crosshairs, I do not recommend mil-dots as we have too much to distract us without having to worry about which dot to use.
3) I'll defer the other in NE respond to this.
4) Relax, have fun, show up at some and try what others have.
Welcome to an addictive sport.

Before you go, you should get a good 200 meter zero on your tika and set the elevation turet to zero. If you have the correct distances you should get zeros for the other 3 animals.
Roughly for most sil rifles;
chickens 200m -0
pigs 300m - 2
turkeys 385m - 4 to 5
rams 500n - 8 to 10
Don't be disapointed with 5 or 6 score on your first match...... Like Mary said, have a good time and don't be afraid to ask questions.

You can't go wrong with a 700....start in hunter rifle ...then start the tinkering

as the 700 action makes for a lot of custom rifle. As far as schedules in NY check out the NRA Shooting Sports magazine....it lists all approved and registered matches and it online. I didn't know that you could have anything that goes bang in NY

LOck914,
Where in NY are you. Location here is near Binghamton, NY. We travel to PA for most of our HP Silhouette shooting to CSLC Consolidated Sportsmen of Lycoming County near Montoursville, PA
http://www.consolidatedsportsmen.com/
and the Ridgway Rifle Club in Ridgway, PA
http://ridgwayrifleclub.com/
I'm shooting a Tikka T3 in 6.5x55 with good results.
