Best Replacement Triggers for Rem 700's
Ladies and Gents,
I'm way behind the technology curve when it comes to who makes the top Rem 700 replacement triggers (XR-100 action.) I'm looking for a single-stage trigger that breaks clean at about 8 oz. Your recommendations will be greatly appreciated. A new 7-04 rifle is currently being built by a friend & gunsmith. The barreled action should land in a week or two.
I also have a Treebone Carving stock that needs inletting and pillar bedding. Who is doing top-class work, at a reasonable price with short delivery times?

The Jewell trigger that I had on my highpower silhouette rifle was wonderful for a single stage, but I don't really like single stage triggers. I believe that it's probably on one of Tony Tello's guns now. I had it adjusted up to 2lbs so I could shoot both classes with it, but it would adjust to lower than that. I believe it was this one, but if you're going with 8oz you might not need it with a safety.

I tried the Jackson 2-stage next and a full cleaning/lubing with locktite on the appropriate screws got it to be very consistent, but I just didn't like the feel of it. I don't know if Jerry is talking about a Jackson single-stage or two-stage. As for the stock work, both Evelio McDonald and Steve Wooster are top notch on both quality and delivery time. I had them working on synthetic stocks, but I believe that they'd just as happily work on wood.

Dan,
Put Jewell's in all of mine and love how crisp they break. Like Jason didn't care for the Jackson two stage that much and went to the Jewell.

I have the CG X-Treme Mod 22 2-stage. http://www.x-tremeshooting.com/index.ph ... trememod22
I like it very much. I've heard some other silhouette shooters not speak well of these but I have never had a problem getting it set the way I like. I've spoken with the owner several times and he has been very helpful. He did share with me that the majority of his customers are bench shooters and that the silhouette shooters seem to have the most problems. He thinks we fiddle too much.

Last year I asked Mark Pharr at Zwolle this same question. "Get a Jewell"
I asked a couple others about the Jackson and was told they weren't dependable. Specifically, screws would back out, come loose, whatever. In all fairness, this was not witht he current model.
I have since taken Marks recommendation and couldnt be happier. I will add that I initially set the trigger when new. Then it changed a bit over 6 months. After that, no changes. The tripple lever design breaks like glass.

Thanks all,
I've been using Jewell triggers for many years. Glad to hear they are still the way to go. They are easy to adjust.

KB,
You might consider an Anschutz 2-stage with adapter. Briley makes one also. I don't know which is best.

If adjusted right they say the Jackson is great and there are a lot of people that love them, I prefer a single stage with a crisp break so I didn't.kevinbear wrote:For years I've wanted a good 2 stage trigger for my 700, anyone have one that is great?

No way. That little Weatherby/Anschutz still shoots better than I can. A 1712 won't gain me anything except a lighter wallet.kevinbear wrote:Trent, you trading guns again...geez just buy a friggin 1712 and get on with it
The 54MS though, I'm still not comfortable with it yet.

Dan: Jewel's aren't bad although I heard that current production is a little "off" but I don't personally know. I use a Kelbly trigger. They also purvey Stolle actions etc. That trigger goes into the ounces and up to a few lbs. Pins are used to establish the fulcrum for the levers...as you place the pins up the scal the weight of pull increases and the lock time decreases! In between adjustments to weight of pull etc are by the usual adjustment screws. The all time best trigger is a Kenyon...but Karl Kenyon is no longer with us ....so good luck finding one for sale. I have a couple...don't ask!

Over the years I used and worked on them and other friends Jewels', they could indeed be off, sometimes a might-piece off. Their "fake", 2-stage triggers were very difficult to get to work well. Out of the dozen or so I worked on, including 3 of mine, only one worked consistently on the first-stage, the "fake" 2-stage and break. That is the only one I still have.
I'm ogling the Kelbly trigger, didn't they were in the business. Only a cursory search and review was done during the first cup of Joe. Tonight I'll really give the research a go. They look very interesting.
Karl Kenyon was indeed a fine gunsmith and person. Back in the 90's he did the finest 22 SB Prone Anschutz-based gun and Std 22LR Silhouette. Both those guns shot lights-out. I have one of his Win 52 triggers. And have worked on a buddie's Rem 700 model with the Kenyon on it. Fine triggers all.
But, the most unsung trigger hero was Wally Mutamyer. He was a master machinist for Hewlett Packard for a long time. That man could make anything in an HP machine shop only 4 miles from my place. Me made the "Triad" trigger that fits the Rem 700's. It is a single stage with all the adjustment bells and whistles a shooter would require. I have one to put on the new rifle but I lost a critical part.
Cheers,
Dan Theodore
