I just cast my vote and fall in the 16-20. I started off the season the same with intension to do some practicing, which I cannot get disciplined to do. Even dry fire in the basement. I need one more score of 20 or better, then can rejoice being an AA.
Tuesday, I pulled out a picture I had taken at last years state championship to review Waldo's rifle hold, who is our only master shooter in our state. Last year it was the trigger guard resting in my palm. This year I settled for a thumb rest on the trigger guard with index and middle finger spread forward under stock. My main problem is the stupid follow through!
Anyway, I went to the range, 10 minute drive, and copied Waldo's hold with index finger folded down so stock rests along middle finger joint to the knuckle[flat service] and the thumb pinching the side of the stock. The other three fingers rest along the opposite side of the stock. Anyway, Waldo's hold seemed a more natural and comfortable hold for me. Also, producing less wobble for me. I was happy with hitting the pig swinger with more consistency, 3 out of 5 or 6 out of 10. I went home.
I will be arriving a little early for this evenings match to get more in a routine and feel for my new hold. I feel more confident and looking at shooting higher scores and boost average to 22 by end of September. I have to have some goal. 7C, 6P, 4T, 5R or something like that.

I will have taped on top of my scope, Follow
Through

I shoot with Waldo on Monday nights at Da'Boone. He is a great role model to watch. The problem is I get mesmerized by watching 30+ falling targets when he shoots

Shorterer, Waldo just plain goes about his business. He won't know until the day b/4, if he will attend our State championship, as of yesterday. I plan to join your Monday night match this coming Monday and arrive around 4:30. This will be my first time visit and will survive the drive.

Average Score for what?
Hunter Rifle? - we don't shoot it here, but I'd like to try it someday...
Cowboy Smallbore - I average 26
Cowboy Pistol Cartridge - I average 24
Cowboy Rifle - I average 28
BPCR - I average 18
Lots of room for improvement in all areas...

BT, I see by the low numbers of your posts that your relatively new to steel chickens, there's actually a cowboy silhouette as well as a blackpowder sub-forum on this website, hope this clears up any confusion you have, this is the sub-forum for scoped 22LR guns. The classifications are different and in the case of blackpowder even the rules for shooting are quite different.

I have been tracking my scores in Excel and my Mean is 18.38 with a standard deviation of 3.82.
I really need to be more consistent!

Looks to me that we have a bunch of damn good AA shooters here if we are talking about important matches and not just the local club matches.

I'm working on an average. I shot my first match in southern michigan last month, shot 7/40. In practice on 50Ft paper targets I've shot 13/40. I shoot a CZ453 and I'm finding this game a lot harder than shooting a Garand or AR trussed up in a shooting coat.
Next Saturday will be my second match of my life at Dorr. I hope to do better. I plan to have fun no matter how it goes.

You're doing great. I think I remember my first match was a 5 or 6 out of 40. I know this will be counterintuitive, but I wouldn't even think about my score for these first couple of months if I were you. Work on your positioning and get comfortable with the rifle; then work on the process of making quality shots. Keep up the practicing and shoot a lot and the good scores will take care of themselves.
