I would like to announce that Magnolia Rifle and Pistol Club in Jackson, MS. will start holding monthly NRA Smallbore Rifle Matchs in 2007. This is the first range in Central Mississippi to ever hold a Smallbore Silhouette Rifle Match to my knowledge. Matchs for 2007 are March 10, April 14, May 12, July 14, August 11, September 8, October 13 and November 10. In other words the second Saturday of the month February through November every year excluding the month of June. We have a nice clubhouse with restrooms. We are located close to Interstate 55, Interstate 20 and Highway 49. Contact me before you drive a great distance, our range has flooded during the rainy season. Thanks everyone for your input and support. I am still waiting for the paperwork to come back from the Silhouette Division of the NRA. I hope it comes back before the first match. I would like some patience and help from the experienced Silhouette Shooters that are coming to participate. Let me explain. Except for about 4 people, the local club members here have no concept of course of fire or match procedure for any kind of match much less Smallbore Silhouette. We have over 900 members in our club at this time. For this reason and safety reasons, I will run the first few matchs slowly compared to the pace we are all used to. I still plan to be finished by Lunch time however. I want to run the match by the relay method instead of the flow method, have shootoffs if needed, give a little cash(Entry Fee) and a prize back to the Match Winner and small prizes to the Class Winners and Juniors, assign match starting positions on scorecards that I provide to the shooters, shoot Hunter and Smallbore Rifle separately and have a short awards ceremony for each Division. The main reason I need to do this for a local Match is that for some reason the Locals who show an interest in Smallbore Silhouette will not travel like the rest of us do to begin their introduction to this sport. I simply do not understand it. They first need to be exposed to the typical way regional, State and National matchs are held or they will be very confused when they finally go to a bigger match.

I got to the point where I felt it was my duty to my local shooting community to start Smallbore Matchs for the people here to learn Marksmanship and how to really conduct themselves in a proper manner at a shooting range. Smallbore Silhouette Matchs taught my son how to conduct himself in a way that I do not think anything else could and I hope it does the same thing for other people in our Central Mississippi area. What you will see at our range in 2007 is not the way it will always be. I have made a long term commitment to steadily improve and expand Magnolia Rifle and Pistol Club's Silhouette Facilities each and every year as much as the Board of Directors will allow. To sum it up, I would love to have experienced shooters shoot with us when they can fit it into their schedule because there will be so many first time competitors. If you have never shot Smallbore Rilfe Silhouette, want to start and live in the Central Mississippi or East Central Lousiana Area come shoot with us. We will help you get started on this wonderful journey.

Range is open at 0800 and registration will be till 0845, match begins at 0900. $10.00 entry fee

The $10 entry fee covers both Hunter and Smallbore Rifle. Juniors pay $5 total for both rifles. To me these are high entry fees and I wish I could let everyone shoot for free but after 2007 I will have to pay the club $1.50 per shooter for each rifle for a total of $3.00 to the club for most shooters. If a Junior wins a pin or prize, I break even after paying the club. If a Junior wins more than one pin or prize I go in the hole and the entry fee from the adults will make up for the difference. I feel the kids deserve some hardware even if its small when they do well. Just wanted to explain why I have to charge what I think is a high entry fee for monthly matchs.

Bobby, your match fees seem very reasonable to me. Our matches here are $15 for both guns in a 40 shot match. That doesnt seem unreasonable to me. I would love to pay $10 but I understand that if we want to keep the facilities for the sport that the clubs need to make some sort of profit.

Bobby, I would ask the range if you can keep the extra profits to help pay for range improvements. If you continue to improve the range maybe the size of the match will get bigger as well.

Give them a year pass for $80.00, that will let them shoot for free at any of the matchs. Or they can pay $80.00 for seven matches and the eighth is free. What a deal.

Hello Everyone, I shoot at a local range where they have six silhouette matches a year and usually charge $10.00 per gun or if somebody wanted to join the league for the year they would pay $100 up front that would entitle them to shoot 12 guns (twice per match in most cases), lunch (costs $5.00) and a T-shirt at the end of the year.

The shooters that join the league save roughly $90.00 per year and the club gets the money up front so that they can operate (buy paint, replace targets, etc.) a win win situation for the club and for the shooters that I would like other shooting ranges to follow.

The reverse of the coin has been the entry fees charged at our State Championships, they have been charging lately $100 for shooting two guns plus $10.00 for target setters and the trophies given are no different than the ones we got when the fees were half that. The fees do not stop me and the other hard-core shooters from going to those matches but I have noticed that attendance to those matches is less than half of what it used to be. I believe that charging exorbitant entry fees is a sure way of killing the sport.

Ray Schafer, I just want to mention that the easiest part of getting a new range started for Smallbore Silhouette in Jackson, MS. was the purchase of Schafer Targets. We have fired practice matchs with our new targets and the way they sound and react to hits is wonderful. There is no substitute for quality cast iron targets. Proper targets are one of the things that make Smallbore Rifle Silhouette different from even the other Silhouette disciplines. Our target purchase was about the only thing in our startup process that was done without a hitch. Thanks for your fine products and I hope as our program grows we will be able to add more rails, more firing points and more targets.
