Last year I replaced several barrels, used, and new with the LILJA tight bore barrels. They all shot fantastic compared to the standard barrels that were originally on the guns.
Well a month ago, my wife ask me what kind of gun I wanted for Chrismass ( I wonder why??? ) but I told her, you know what, I put on several of this new barrels on my custumers guns, and I sure would love to have one on my rifle. So miracously I happen to have one in stock ( I actually took one from a custumer, that is waiting on an action ).
But to make my story short, I have taken the gun to the range several times, and it shoots great, but I was kind of concerned about what kind of difference would it make in velocity having a tight bore.
I went to the range about two weeks ago, and chrono the vel. in several std. vel. ammo. and they run about 1,020 fps ave. which is about 60fps. slower than standard bore rifles.
One of my customers, mention to me that he was getting, pretty good groups at the rams using match pistol ammo. which is higher velocity than std. rifle. Today I did not feel like working on guns , I decided to go to the range, and have some fun. I tried some high velocity ammo. at the rams, and the groups were fantastic compare to any std. vel. ammo. that I shot before.
The point that I am trying to make is, you folks out there, with the tight bore barrels, try some good high speed ammo at the rams, and let me know if you see an improvement on accuracy.
I won't mention what kind of high vel. ammo. I used, but is in a blue box, and made in USA really cheap.

How tight is the Lilja barrel? CZ supposedly cuts their bores to .215 and I'm wondering if a hotter cartridge would improve their performance at Rams?

The normal 22 L.R. barrels, the bore is .217, the tight bore by Lilja is .215,
How can you tell the dia. on your CZ ??? Its really impossible to measure unless you have an air guage machine, or somebody from the factory is giving you does dimensions.

That (.215 bore diameter) was posted on Rim Fire Central and I haven't bothered tracking down a cross reference, so I don't know for certain. I do know that CZ's have tight bores from pulling patches through them. Not very precise, but pull an over sized patch through a CZ and you'll understand.

Hey blaubear
I wish everybody would quit using all this fictituos names so I know who the hell I am talking to.
But anyway, running a tight patch thru the bore really won't tell me much, But you should be able to tell when you close the bolt on a tight bore, first it takes more effort to close the bolt, and secondly if you don't fired the round, when you try to extract it, chances are the extractors will over ride the rim of the case, and the round will still be in the chamber. Reason for this, the bullet is engraved in the bore, and the lands.
How come the spelling check don't work on this site ???? It would sure help.

Sorry about the name, Evelio. Ask John Neihouse about Bob Cloninger if that would help.

Evelio: How fast is high speed? Does that mean supersonic? Regards, Alston Jennings.

AJJ the speed on most ammo labeled High Speed average about 1300 fps. with the 40 gr. bullets. I don't know about Stingers, Yellow Jackets, or any of the 35 grains ammo.

your accuracy may be attributed to the Federal 510 I'm assuming you used. For some unknown reason it shoots extremely well in my CZ and if you check the boys on RFC they all have had fantastic results as well using this ammo. I shoot matches with Wolf MT but have been known to win some money shoots at a 150yd ram using the Federal 510 high vels. It would make sense that the tighter the bore the more friction it would impart on the bullet reducing velocity......good info to be aware of though

Evelio, what ammunition were you using? Some of the Federal is priced like Eley Practice and some of it is pretty inexpensive. Federal Automatch shot the best in the 10/22 (with Green Mountain barrel) that I started Silhouette with, but it was never tested in the CZ's or Remington's I moved on to.
Federal has some good stuff!

I like the federal 510, it shoots better than most ammo that cost 3 tims as much. A little fast, but great for practice.

Well PROPWASH got it right, I have a bunch of the Fed. 510 that I use on my lever gun, and I shot a lot of 10's turkeys, and rams, with it, is really cheap, even do the price is gone up some, when I first bought it a couple of years ago, I was paying $ 8.00 for a brick at Academy, now is about $11.00 a brick. It shoots extremely well on my lever gun, but it never cross my mind, to try shooting it on any of my other guns that never seen anything but Ely, and Lapua.
After one of my buddies told me about the high speed pistol ammo. shooting good groups at the rams, in the tight bore barrel, I decided just for the hell of it, I will give the 510 a try, since that's all the high vel. ammo. that I have. Well the first shot was about 6'' higher than my normal zero, the second shot I could not see, I kind of laugh to myself, I figure I missed the paper, the third shot was touching the first, now I really got serious, the fourth shot was about 1 1/2'' to the left, here we go, the fifth shot I could not tell where it went. I walked down range to see if I could tell where my other shots hit, well they were all into a little 3/8'' cluster. I was shaking my head all the way back to the firing line.
I decided to not change anything, reloaded 3 mags. and started shooting.
After 20 shots I had a cluster of 12 rounds that could be covered with a quater, and two more flyers, one about 1'' high, and the other one about the same distance to the right of the group.
I will be going to the range tomorrow, and try again, I will also try to pick up some better high speed ammo. and try them also.
I will let you all know the results.

Mr. Evelio, were you shooting your groups at 100 yards or meters by any chance? I assumed that since your tread begins saying one of your customers was getting good results with HV ammo at rams.
I too have been looking for good HV ammo to use in Cowboy Lever Action SB and have been testing some ammo to see what performs better. I have been using Lapua Scoremax and Federal 900 for the last six years with good success but eventually I am going to run out that ammo and I want to find something else to replace it. So far my best results have been with Fiocchi HV both the 38gr Hollow Points and 40gr Solids have shown me decent accuracy with my scoped 54 1808. Like you I found that the HV ammo shot six minutes of angle or higher at the ram line. I was shooting at a metal plate so I did not have a chance to measure the groups but so far I am happy with what I have seen. I had ordered two boxes of each to test and then more recently I ordered one case of the 40gr ammo that just arrived and have not had a chance to test it.
A few years back I bought some Winchester .22Xpert Hollow Point HV to shoot squirrels with and on a good day I could shoot nine out of ten rams in the head from the bench with a 54 Sporter rifle so I decided to start using it at local matches but I got frustrated after a few months because I felt that I was not getting enough long range targets that I thought were good shots then one day when the wind was blowing very hard I tested the ammo from the bench to see what it would do and I was very surprised to see that it would not group at all, it was like if the rifle was giving me large patterns instead of groups. I had to shoot 18 rounds to hit 10 rams from the bench aiming dead center first and later chasing the spotter trying to guess where the wind would take the next round.
After that eye opener I decided not to use that ammo any more because it was only accurate in perfect weather and around here we have more windy days than not.
