I am partial to David Tubbs' book Hi Power Rifle and Lanny Basshams' With Winning in Mind. Champions Choice carries both titles.

If you haven't read "With Winning in Mind" that John mentioned, go with that first. It's the best I have read to get your head straight for matches, which is most of the battle in silhouette.

Have heard from shooters that I greatly respect that "The Ways of the Rifle" is also very good.

Has the time not arrived for someone to write the Silhouette Book to document what is going on not only in Smallbore Rifle but all the other Silhouette disciplines also. Pictures of the current equipment both for pistol and rifle plus all the various people competing at this point in history should be included. We have so many knowledgeable individuals participating that sort of specialize in one aspect of our sport. Just a few examples(Not room here to mention every one/ no offense): James Culpepper knows about and has probably owned every variation of Anschutz Sporter rifle every created. Brad Bishop has owned or currently owns or knows the details of every air rifle ever used in Silhouette. Then you have the Haltom City, Texas folks(Richard Kiesov and Jim Ishmael) who specialize in Air Pistol Silhouette and can relate all their experiences shooting at least one match a week 52 weeks a year. I am sure there are other people in the other Silhouette Divisions that are just as informed about their specialty. A book about the 1911 and competing with it similar to what I am suggesting for Silhouette was entitled "The Custom Government Model Pistol" authored by Layne Simpson. Most folks would willingly donate pictures, articles, etc. in a collaborative effort to produce such a book. Silhouette is very special because it is all about a human being standing on his two legs out in the elements and using basically nothing but what God provided him with to hit very small targets at long distances. It is the rawest, purest form of competitive marksmanship available to us today. This sport is important because of all the people from the youngest to the oldest who devote their time and talents to make it what it is whether they are shooting, building rifles, promoting the sport to new shooters, or directing matchs. A book of substance should be written.

We here at Steelchickens concur. Since we're novices, its our intention to provide this website and forum as a substitute until that time.

mordecai, this website is a very well done substitute and filled a tremendous void for all of us in this sport. I know that a lot of folks are miffed at the Air Rifle rule flip flopping that took place a few years ago but I think the addition of an Air Pistol and Air Rifle Forum would also fill a void because there are a whole lot of folks still participating in both disciplines. My family is tooling up to shoot NRA Air Pistols and if it had not been for the advice of the folks that shoot weekly matchs at Haltom City, Texas I would have been lost. The NRA Air pistol rules have been stable and have never been changed since their initial acceptance if I am not mistaken. Just a suggestion.

There was a book 'Metallic Silhouette' by Elgin Gates printed in the 80s.
The unfortunate thing with any book , unless it is a definitive topic, is that
the material presented becomes dated in very short time.
The changes in equipment in the last 20 years in this sport and the rules
affecting the changes probably are the clearest example.
Even though the presentation of ideas on this forum at times is done with
considerable levity, it his highly commendable of those who
contribute and willingly share their knowledge for the edification ,advancement of the sport and amusement for others.
This involvement is something that a book cannot replicate as once it is printed it is no longer current.
I enjoy this forum immensely and hope to continue for many more years.
