hi Guys (and Gals),

i want to try HP and have no place to shoot past 100m, does any one have a half size chicken that will stand up to a HP bashing at 100m? where could a bloke aquire such an item?

That would be one tough chicken.

I think you would be better off shooting reduced cast loads for practice. I think you could get away with using 1/2 inch mild steel for the cast loads at 100m.

They use 1/2 size chickens at 50 meters for big bore pistol. The target are hard steel and hold up to 223, 6.5 BR, and 7mm BR. I would think they would be fine for 100 meter also.

Here is a link to a site that makes swingers and free standing target, I am sure there are others. You may want to go with 1/2" instead of 3/8" material.

Cast loads would be one option for you, or just reload with some safe reduced power loads with mid weight bullets or cheap bulk bullets and you should be fine. I have found that high velocity does much of the damage to steel when shot with HP bullets. Back off the velocity a bit and you should be fine. Use a ballistic table for your ammo to see what it would typically be traveling at 200m and see if you can find a load that produces that velocity or less at 100m and you will be safe as far as target damage.

Going with a harder steel would also make for longer lasting target. AR500 should do the trick admirably and like Stsbuyer says, 1/2" would be better than 3/8" any day for a swinger.

Jeaux, it is my experience too that high velocity is what does the target damage. A 223 soft point will do more damage to a chicken at 200m that a 45/70 will.

I haven't tried it but........ I think a mv of 2,400fps or less AND an energy of 1,400ft/lb or less would not damage a 1/2 inch chicken made out of T-1 steel.
