Dave, Tom and I hit the road at 4:30 am to make the five hour ride to the world famous Gateway Dynamite Shoot. This event happens twice a year, every year since the late 40's. The weather was quite warm for this time of year, it hit 85 with full sun all day. Off and on breezes made it tricky at times to hit the pop can targets. Some were placed on end making them even tougher. The ones out to 275 yards naturally took longer to set off. Dave and I each hit only eleven (far from my event record of 21 back in 04 ) and Tom hit four. The kids 14 and under got to take out a bunch of them off the benchrest.

Attendance was down from he May shoot, maybe 150 or so shooters. We will be back next spring hopefully with a couple of more silhouette shooters. The event got over at 5 pm and we got home just after 10. A long day of driving but worth every penny. I took a couple of videos thru the Kowa and a bunch of pictures.

Sounds and looks like fun! I checked the webpage and the entry form said $2 a shot x 2 shot min per attempt but it was for 2007 it seemed and it didn't say what the payout was for a hit. What is the minimum caliber required to blow one?

Shooting the beer can sized targets from 160 to 275 yards offhand is pretty tough. A day of of shooting dynamite makes shooting a high power silhouette match look easy. Bob and I would have killed a lot of steel chickens if they been set up instead of the dynamite filled cans. Each shot costs the shooter $2, if you hit they pay you $10. When McAlice hit 21 cans of dynamite he had a nice payday. The next year after McAlice's stellar shooting the made the the offhand course a bit more challenging for the rest of us.

Dee,the explosive compound is called Uni-Gel. It is a white clay like solid supplied in one inch diameter six foot long rods. It's the same stuff used in the mining and construction industries. It is impact sensitive, hence the use of blasting caps or det cord for detonation. Four 5 inch long pieces fit snugly into an open top beverage can. It is then foil wrapped for better visibility and duct taped to a wood stick and placed on the hill with an assigned number. BATFE requires strict record keeping of all 200 charges planted on the hill.

A .22 long rifle round will set them off only out to 125 yds. and no futher. The kids were setting off a bunch out to 165 yds.with a .17 HMR. I have used my .22 Hornet out to 270 yds. but wind drift causes many misses. The most common round on the offhand line is the .223 Rem. in all gun types. We saw just about every cartridge made in use that day. And most shot factory ammo. One teen fired off two boxes of Winchester Supreme .300 WSM. $$$$$$ We even watched a guy take a beating firing his Ruger 77 Tropical in .375 H&H with iron sites.

Actually thought about it Bob. My boss lives in Nederland and my office was actually out of Boulder so I've spent a lot of time there, was actualling looking at places in Longmont several years ago. But, right now tied here as my Mom is here and is 99, wifes Mom is 89.... so it makes it difficult to change addresses right now. Besides I'd hate to show you up with a 6.5 every month

Snake, with my own two eyes I witnessed Mr.B light up dynamite with his 6.5x47 Lapua. Like I said, the varmint cartridges do well at the Dynamite Shoot.

McA--being familiar with explosives...I can assure you that friction can light off dynamite....oh wait! 6.5? Friction?....sorry ...same thing
