weeding out flyers ???

Post by Hawk-1 »

I have been practicing with some cci sv. I am trying to find a way to cut down on some flyers. Will weighing the bullets, or measuring rim thickness help take care of this, or is a flyer just going to be a flyer? thanks

Why do you assume it's an ammunition problem?

Why do you assume it's an ammunition problem? I don't assume, I know! Come watch me on the bench and you'll know. I still would like an answer if someone has tried the methods mentioned. Don't mean to sound like a jerk, sorry.

Hawk,
I have seen several others weigh and mic their rounds (Wolf), and they are pretty good shots, they seemed to think it helped, so on the serious side, if nothing else it helped the mental side.

You simply sound confident in your technique and equipment.

Others have sorted ammunition by weight and claimed good results, though I always prefer to spend range time practicing. When ammunition is so variable it needs weighed and sorted, I use some other ammunition.

Hawk, when using inexpensive ammo you should limit your practice to pig distance and that way the fliers will not show as bad as if you used it at turkey and ram distance. You can always use Green Tag for long range without sorting it by weight. If you have a very sensitive (read expensive) digital scale and lots of time sorting by weight will more than likely help to sort some of the fliers from the rest, my two cents worth. I have reduced paper targets for 25 and 50 in case you are interested in having them, they are pdf files.

B.C. equiptment: 1712 with Leu. 8.5x25, premier boosted 20x50. I am trying to use the less expensive ammo for practice and local club matches. I pay for 4 shooting, wife and 2 sons everytime we go to the range. Buying each good set-ups plus a couple bricks everytime we go to the range can get expensive. Add to that hotels, travel etc. to go to Ga. State, Gateway, La. plus NC and you can see why I am trying to find a better way. I will stop by the range this afternoon and shoot a couple groups if it doesn't get dark on me and try and post them.(Haven't done that before so I don't know if I should use phone or camera) Ideas? ps flyers are not horrible just enough to loose 2 or 3 a round.(just a guess) usually one half inch to one inch out of group. Yes I would like pdf of reduced targets, thanks

Federal Automatch is the best bulk pack ammunition I have tried. Avoid Eley Sport and anything copper washed.

yOU are right with the federal automatch. It does shoot good for the price in each of my rifles. The only difference is that my scope setting change drastically with the automatch. With the cci standard, it is to close to call. Also recoil is quite a bit different. I can eaisly see the animals falling with eley, but not with the automatch.I have to hold really hard to get the same look. Have you experienced anything similar?

Yes. There is noticeable recoil and muzzle blast with the Automatch since it is high velocity. What ammunition do you use for matches?

high velocity
do not forget that some ranges do not allow high velocity ammo because of the damage it does to the chickens especially.

B.C. I am using Eley match Xtra plus(black box) for matches. The fed. auto match list velocity at 1200fps. What is the max. allowed at matches? If nothing else the auto match makes me concentrate more on follow through in practice. Hopefully that will transfer in matches. I only have 2 bricks left from 10 yrs. ago, so I am looking for a good deal to replace it with.
