Is there an air rifle suitable for silhouette & thinning the tree rat herd?

HA! I think it might be more cost effective to catch them, sterilze them and release! But that would sure be a fun instrument to use!!
I TX200 would be just as effective. You could use it to remove tree rats, shoot in sporter, shoot in open and even take up field target...all with one gun! Not to mention the ability to practice at home and save the gas of going to the range.

rats fall just as easily

Fair enough - I'm in the hunt for something reliable, legal for air rifle sillywet and unfortunate for pests within 10-15 meters.

BlauBear, There are several options. Your first decision needs to be, and I know how you like to make a decision, is springer or PCP. PCP's are great, less effort and you don't have to cock it all the time saving you time and energy, but more costly for the tank or pump. The handpump will require about 200 pumps

I have both the AirArms TX200 (Springer) and a Styer AZ (PCP). The TX will be close on weight for sporter class with a big scope, the Styer shoots in open. There are lots of choices, more then in SB. Check out those forums and ask questions. If you have Field Target around where you are the TX is also great for that. The key is do some research try to handle as many as you can as each balances different and get a good reliable rifle the first time and you'll really enjoy it.

Bob, the TX200, or comparable good quality springer, is tempting for its simplicity and versatility even though the recoil makes some problems.

No problem - Nesika stock, 504 barrel relined to .177 (factory barrel's crap anyway) and Air Arms PCP power plant. No sweat.

I use a 25 year old R1 that has a theoben gas ram in 22 caliber deadly on rats and the steel critters. For really big game I have a Theoben Elimenator same caliber but about 34 foot pounds or so drops em dead at incredible ranges...

I did the impulsive thing and jumped into an Anschutz 2002 Scuba Gun at Winnsboro last week! Many thanks to Kitty for leading me into temptation, Pat (you did find your tent, right?) for delivering a great deal and Carol for loaning me a scope! Anyone wanna buy some stuff from my gun locker so I can cover that check Kitty's holding? Please?
