Metallic Silhouette Society Unveils Streamlined Rulebook Project to Grow Sport in the U.S.

The Metallic Silhouette Society (MSS) is proud to announce the planned release of a newly revised rulebook for Metallic Silhouette Shooting, marking a significant step forward in making the sport more accessible and enjoyable for shooters across the United States. This comprehensive overhaul simplifies and clarifies the previously complex and often vague rules, paving the way for greater participation and enthusiasm in this classic marksmanship discipline.

Metallic Silhouette Shooting, a challenging and rewarding sport where competitors aim at steel targets shaped like animals at varying distances, has long been celebrated for its test of precision and skill. However, the MSS recognized that the sport’s growth has been hampered by an outdated and cumbersome rulebook. The new rules, crafted with input from seasoned shooters and newcomers alike, eliminate confusion while preserving the sport’s competitive integrity.

“Our mission is to build Metallic Silhouette Shooting into a thriving community across the U.S.,” said David Mackiernan, creator of the Metallic Silhouette Society. “Simplifying the rulebook is a game-changer—it lowers the barrier to entry for new shooters, ensures consistency at matches, and lets the focus stay on the excitement of the sport itself.”

Key updates in the rulebook include clear definitions of equipment standards, streamlined match procedures, consolidation of disciplines, and concise guidelines for scoring and safety.

Along with inclusion of disciplines that reflect a mix of modern and classic rifles that have not always had a firm place in the sport. Including a streamlining of equipment standards that are inline with modern available equipment.

These changes are designed to make the sport more approachable for beginners while maintaining the high standards and classic experience that veteran shooters expect.

The Metallic Silhouette Society is committed to expanding the sport’s reach through grassroots efforts, including hosting introductory clinics, supporting local clubs, and promoting competitive events nationwide. The new rulebook will be available for download on the MSS website starting June 13th, Society's tenth anniversary.
Updates and previews are available on the website.
