RCBS decapping solution for 6.5X47 Lapua

Early on when Evelio built my 6.5X47 Lapua I ordered a set of RCBS dies. As most of you know the decap pin in the RCBS set was too large for the flash hole in the Lapua brass. RCBS was working on the problem, I was told and they would ship a solution as soon as it was available. Got this piece from them on Tuesday...

I'm a little confused....Doesn't look like any decapping pin I've ever used....Looks a lot like a shellholder with no hole in it....or a shellholder for a priming tool.......Anyone else gotten something from RCBS......am I missing something?????

BTW have long since went to Wilson arbor press type dies from Sinclair and am very pleased with them...Decapper and all...

Kitty, I've had the same problem in the past with Lapua brass and what I have done is put the over sized decap pin on a drill and using sand paper or file have made it to fit the smaller flash holes in the Lapua Brass. That was the quick fix for me and I did not have to wait to get the correct size pin.

I do the same thing as Mr. Ringer. I try to get the diameter to .05-.055. I'm wondering, what kind of instructions came with that prototype decapper?

No instructions........I would call and ask, but since I'm not using the dies anyway it's not worth my time....When I purchased the die set I knew that the pin was too big, had already talked to others who had bought the dies...Called RCBS to get on the list for the replacement pin and figured it would be forthcoming shortly..That was 6 months ago....Guess it took them a while to come up with the solution they sent me...Just wondered if anyone else received one of these in the mail.....

I must have been on the moon for the last couple of months or so. I've had a set of RCBS dies laying around and didn't know about the oversize decapping pin. You would think that they would have had an engineer of some sort figuring this stuff out. Surprise!

John,

RCBS solution for me was to turn some regular pins down and send me a complete new decapping assembly with the old style pins. They as if there was anything else I needed and I ask when they would have a neck die available. The next day a UPS red package came in with the decapping assembly and a new in the box neck sizing die with its own decapping assembly. No charge to me, that

I got the Wilson's on John's recommendation, but I'm still waiting for the neck bushing, that is on backorder. I am planning on ordering a set of Redding dies after the holidays, but I'll have to check to make sure their decapping pin is correctly sized.

No rush... as I don't have the rifle yet anyway, so I'm just in the 'gathering' stages now. The good news is all I need is the neck bushing then long calls with Kitty on how to use all this stuff :-)

I think it is like everything else. The kid that they probably assigned to fix the problem with the decapping pins was flipping burgers a couple of days ago, and was changing oil a couple of days before that!

I think they are just screwing with you :-)

Sinclair makes a flash hole reamer for the Lapua PPC, BR and 6.5x47 with .060 flash holes. It reams them to .0625 so the decappring pins can go through without getting stuck. Sinclair Part # is 07-3000.

Search Sinclair International on the part number if this link doesn't take you there;

The last guy that gave Rambo a plastic banana is still walking kind of funny.

Not sure that opening up the flash hole would be a good idea.....Lapua most likely made it that way for a reason.....My opinion only YMMV

Kitty, the .060 flash hole in Lapua brass is likley due to the drill is a standard metric size of 1.5mm.( Lapua drills, not punches their flash holes. That is why they are centered so well ) ..., .060 is nearly 1.5mm. A standard sheet of paper is .003 thick. So, reaming out .0025 (.0012 per side) of the flash hole is negligable. You would hardly feel cutting this small amount of soft brass with a hand held pin reamer. My Redding dies decapping pins measure .063. They would easily pass thru and just smooth out the hole a little.
