Ballpark number on 54MSR

Post by ter »

For a used but very good 54MSR in a Pharr synthetic stock with Walther barrel. I saw stock MSR for some silly prices on rimfire central.

If it made hunter weight I'd pay $2000 easy, maybe more.

With a custom barrel, anything between $2 and $3k would be a good deal. With custom actions out now, you can build repeaters of equal quality for that price range

If someone is willing to pay it… it’s not a ridiculous price. ;)

Ter, I think the reason they are getting ridiculous prices, they no longer make the 54MSR.

The Anschutz rifles that I've seen on the RFC classified ads were priced very reasonably.

Butch
All the people that bought the line they would no longer be made in 2016 when they got a few more actions in, well they are being made again. Just add an extra $1000 to the old price

I checked them out. Wow! You weren't kidding! I didn't see an MSR but did see the barreled action for $2800.00.

Yup, a custom action with a custom barrel and nice trigger is cheaper than the barreled 54msr actions now

Trigger aside - A 1710/1712 action with a factory barrel (hunter legal) will do the same thing as a 2,800.00 - 2,900.00 MSR barreled action. The 5018 trigger is definitely a cut above ... but..... For a silhouette shooter (Hunter) A factory trigger adjusted by someone who knows how is (kinda nearly ;) ) every bit as good as a 5018. If you want a 2 oz trigger you can pay the extra $1,100 for it I suppose.

Disagree on the triggers but maybe I'm just sensitive.

I guess I'll cut that 54MSR in Pharr stock loose in the spring. Certainly if I can get the action plus stock value out of it.
Interestingly to the posts above, I have a 1712 in a Wooster stock, and it fits me a lot better. I had a lot of 1712s, but the Wooster has a crazy nice trigger. So in the big picture, I prefer the 1712 to the MSR. I think Evelio Mc Donald smithed both as I recall.

I'd be curious to see both stocks and hear why the fit differently.

I think the biggest difference is the cheek piece. I get better alignment with Wooster design. I also think the palm swell suits my hand better.

Is it the flat top Wooster?
