I never really thought about it as I've only put Standard through the silhouette rifles for the obvious reasons.

But with a lever action, iron sights and bigger targets, is Highspeed ammo worth a little sacrifice in accuracy for a little more energy on the heavier pigs/rams?

I'll be honest, the reason I even thought of it was to simplify my sight settings with a little flatter trajectory.

What's the conventional wisdom on the topic?

I use high velocity ammo because at the clubs I shoot at you will/can ring pigs and rams with standard velocity ammo.

I use CCI Mini-Mags on our pigs only because they are up-sized 20% for 60 meters. With the extra mass, we may get one or two ringers in a match with standard velocity. In hind sight, I should have had them made 3/16" thick instead of 1/4". We also set them light for the same reason. Our 3/16" thick rams seldom ring but it has happened.

Standard Velocity -- everything we hit with it falls down.

I ALWAYS shoot what ever is the most accurate in a rifle. I'd rather hit and ring then not hit....

If you are ringing pigs and rams it's because they are not standard smallbore thickness/weight animals.

I personally wouldn't worry about it. Conditions should be the same for everyone and if you are ringing then everyone else should be too. If shooting PC pigs and rams for SB, ask the match director if they can be set back. I do understand some clubs only have what they have and can't afford 2 sets of animals.

I shoot high velocity ammo. I'll give up a little accuracy for more power, at least at the ram line.

I shoot Aguila Super Extra Standard Velocity 1130FPS exclusively in my Henry. Stupid accurate and about the cheapest ammo I can find. I've never rang a ram or a pig. I take down the majority of pistol cartridge rams, but have rang more than several as well.

I shoot .22 magnum in smallbore. I have learned in silhouette that you should always bring more gun than you need.

I can't swear to it, but I think I get more reliable knock down on pistol cal pigs (which some ranges use for Smallbore) with std velocity ammo. I think the high velocity splatters and doesn't transfer as much energy as a slower round that stays intact. The HV stuff clearly hits the rams harder though.

I use SK high velocity stuff. Unfortunately they don't make it anymore. It was the best of both worlds, accurate and a bit more power.
