7/08 Remington

Post by geo01 »

I have picked up a XP100 in 7/08 Rem that came with some cast projectiles. Majority of them are 175gn in weight and most load books only show data for jacketed projectiles. Does anyone have a starting load to try with this weight? Was after something preferably using IMR 4227 or IMR 4198 as these powders have an equivalent in the ADI (Australian) powder selection.

Thanks in advance for any information provided.

back in the 80's i shot an xp-100 in 7mm-08. my xp-100 has a 10 inch barrel. here is my load data. i would start at at lower powder drop and work up. i would also recheck the loads with a chronograph.

brass used was 308 lake city match brass resized to 7mm-08. primer used federal 210. i tested many loads across my chronograph and did a grouping test off the bench. i went with the best grouping load for the matches. recoil was not bad and i have one setting for c/p/t and went up 5 clicks for the rams on my aimpoint mark 3. cast bullet loads recoil was allmost none and i used my ram setting for c/p/t.

1985 match load data
Speer 130 Spitzer #1623, 36 gr IMR 4895, 2,301 fps. 2.760 oal. use for c/p/t.
Speer 160 Boattail #1634, 36 gr IMR 4895, 2,274 fps. 2.790 oal. rams.

160 gr cast lead gas check, 18.0 gr mp5744, 1,508 fps. c/p/t.
178 gr cast lead gas check, 19.0 gr mp5744, 1,494 fps. rams.

then in 1987 i retested the loads. i do not remember why i did the retest. i got lower fps numbers in the 1987 test. don't know why.
Speer 130 Spitzer #1623, 36 gr IMR 4895, 2,173 fps. use for c/p/t.
Speer 160 Boattail #1634, 36 gr IMR 4895, 2,113 fps. rams.

more data from tests using h4895.
Speer 130 Spitzer #1623, 36 gr h4895, 2,332 fps.
Speer 130 Spitzer #1623, 38 gr h4895, 2,473 fps.
Hornady 139 gr flat base, 34 gr h4895, 2,183 fps.
Hornady 139 gr flat base, 36 gr h4895, 2,362 fps.
Hornady 162 gr hpbt, 32 gr h4895, 2,092 fps.
Hornady 162 gr hpbt, 34 gr h4895, 2,183 fps.
Hornady 162 gr hpbt, 36 gr h4895, 2,330 fps.

other 160 gr cast lead gas check loads with mp5744 tested.
14.0 gr - 1,245 fps
15.0 gr - 1,266 fps
16.0 gr - 1,350 fps
17.0 gr - 1,437 fps
18.0 gr - 1,508 fps

but for some reason unkown to me at this time i loaded 35 gr of imr4895 and/or h4895 using all fmj bullets listed above for the matches. i can not find my data for the 35 grs loads. but i must had a good reason to drop down to 35 gr of 4895.

Thank you for the reply frankmako. I had a bit of a look around the web for mp5744 and found a powder called A-5744 by a company called Accurate Powders. Is this the same powder? Going by the burn rate table on the Accurate Powders website if it is, it sits fairly close to one of the Australian powders I already have.

as far as i know it is the same. they changed part of the name when accurate took over. i still got about one pound of the old mp5744 for the 80's. came in a short black plastic bottle.
