How can a person tell
How can I tell the difference between a ADL, BDL or CDL Remington 700?
I was given one of those inexpensive plastic stocked 700 many years ago. I dig it out of the gun safe yesterday to get at one of my Thompson Contenders only to realize I don't know what it is.
It has a floorplate and holds 5 rounds in the magazine. At least I think it holds 5, maybe 4 rounds.
What should I look for to determine which Remington 700 model it may be?
Thanks.

If it has a floor play it is most likely a BDL. How about posting some photos?

If I recall correctly
ADL internal blind magazine. No bottom floorplate.
BDL external floor plate magazine, so you can empty the rounds by opening the floor plate
CDL upgraded BDL finish features.

my 1960's model adl has no floor plate and a taper barrel. my 1983 bdl has a floor plate and a bull barrel. both have high finish wood stocks.

"Overview
The ADL-BDL designations were originally acronyms for A Grade Deluxe and B Grade Deluxe. The deluxe term was once tacked on to the end of the model designation: Model 700 ADL Deluxe and Model 700 BDL Custom Deluxe.
Both models use similar barreled actions, which feature the strongest actions made, exceptionally crisp triggers and 3.0 millisecond lock times. However, the Model 700 BDL is fit with a hinged floor plate or detachable magazine (DM) that allows the shooter to unload ammunition through the bottom of the rifle by opening the floor plate or removing the magazine. The Model 700 ADL uses a blind magazine and can only be unloaded through the top by working the bolt open and closed.
Both models are offered in variety of styles, calibers and options to meet individual needs, preferences, and hunting conditions. The Model 700 ADL was discontinued in 2005."

Re: How can a person tell
I guess it is pretty safe to say my 700 is a BDL. I am awaiting a reply from Remington on when my rifle was manufactured.
At some point I hope to swap out the stock and maybe have it rebarrelled to some other caliber. It shoots just fine as it is but it will make a nice HP Silhouette rifle.

That sounds too easy.Jerry G wrote:Buy a Tika Dave.
I did handle a Tika in .22-250 at the store the other day and I have to admit it felt like a very well made product.
Who knows, maybe I will sell some stuff to buy one.

There's a few minor differences but the ADL became the SPS about 15 years ago, the ones they sell at discount stores have blind magazines, regular sporting goods stores and big box stores carry the SPS's with floor plates.
Before someone chimes in on how they seen this or that gun at a particular retail place keep in mind that places like Dicks get special runs of 700's that may not be in a catalog.
If your looking for a silhouette rifle here's the one, 260 SPS.
