Good Morning - I've finally relocated to Phoenix and am beginning to shoot small bore metallic silhouette. Are there any good books, with pictures, detailing what constitutes good offhand technique? 3P small bore shooters use The Way of the Rifle as somewhat of their bible. I'm not trying to read my way into improving, but want to know the basics of a good offhand position. Thanks, Tom

There are about as many good stances as there are good shooters. One elbow tight against your body, and get a good natural point of aim. From there, be comfortable. 3 ea 40 shot matches in one day is a long time, even 2.

If you can find something by David Tubb, read it.

Tubbs book High Power Rifle has a large and detailed section about offhand shooting.

There is a russian's book I have that is very very detailed and goes into muscular details, vision oxygen levels, and a thousand other boring but useful things.

I agree on Tubb's high power rifle book. I bought it for my 3p across the course but it helped in silhouette too. Welcome to Phx, shall we see you at the Ben Avery silhouette matches? One coming up this Saturday at 8am.

There are just tons of books. Most really deal with shooting in depth. I very much enjoyed a simple and easy to read book that covers most positions, including offhand. Not exactly on point but not complicated. I don't know if it is still available but it is titled "Marksmanship" by Gary Anderson and was published by he International Shooter Development Fund in 1972. Good luck.

Ways of the Rifle Book by Gaby Buhlmann Heinz Reinkemeier may be the book mentioned above and is a very good book. Jim Owens has a simple book that is good but directed towards offhand cmp/xtc shooting. Tubb's book is good, but his position always bothered my back.

+1 on the Russian....A A YurYev Competitive Rifle Shooting...is one of THE most definitive works I've seen. Last time I looked copies were going for insane $$
