OldRanger,
You seem to have more faith in the NRA than I do.

I don't hate the NRA. I just have very little confidence in them with the exception of their ability to constantly ask for money.GregG wrote:I can see it is time to warm up our song......everyone.... me..me...me......

Re: Classification Update
I agree it is a bit irritating to receive mailing after mailing asking for money. But as a NRA board member down here said Washington listens to members and money. At the 1968 annual meeting the NRA changed direction (by member vote) from being mainly a hunting, shooting organization to a lobbying organization after the passage of the 1968 gun control acts. Do any of you remember this?
I for one am glad they are successful and support them on this mission. Without the NRA what civilian firearm ownership would we have, semi auto NO, magazine more than 10 rounds NO, saturday night specials NO, most hunting bullets NO. With the number of left wing bills introduced and our current president firearms ownership would be greatly restricted with out the NRA. So for that I am glad and do support them.
For supporting the shooting programs, back to money....Do you spend your limited resources on a decaying sport or one that is growing? Shooting tastes change. Sports that were king, cross the course, small-bore three position, bench rest, bullseye pistol, NRA pistol silhouette, IMHSA, NRA rifle silhouette are all in decline. Sports such as USPSA, IDPA, 3-gun are all growing. For the money the NRA will get more bang (members and money) by focusing on these sports than silhouette that has say 100 at nationals. Some of these sports draw this number at a monthly match.
At the end of the day, it is our responsibility to grow our own sport and give feedback to the NRA. I have seen nothing in the Classification change that concerns me yet other than a name change.
I have written this before and will probably again, the NRA is our organization, we can change it if we like. How many of you have you voted? How many of you have run for NRA office? How many of you given any feedback to the NRA?
My guess is very few.

Re: Classification Update
Greg, I don't think anyone here hates the NRA or Gregg C. Gregg is older than I am and I retired 10 years ago. He has been there since the mid 80s. It's time he stepped down. As for the NRA, they could not care less about competitive shooting. We all realize that if we loose our guns, there will be NO competitive but they are also a slow moving bureaucracy staffed by a bunch of drones that have very little work ethic. That is exactly what I saw when I was back in DC working. Many come to work late, take a long break because they got tired on their commute which sometimes spills in to their lunch break. Then to make up for coming late, they leave early which cuts into their afternoon break.
Those of us that complain wish they would be a little more responsive to the shooters that are left. They are beating the drum and don't seem to notice that the numbers of competitive shooters are in decline.
NRA Benefactor for many years.

Re: Classification Update
I do not think Greg's age should have anything to do with him keeping a job or not. Plus as an employer the NRA cannot just fire him; there is this thing call age discriminations in the US.
If he is doing the job his supervisors wants he is golden. I have expressed to his boss my disagreement with the way he handled jury selection one year at nations (do you agree with me you on on the committee, if not no thanks). How many of you have done this?
I keep hearing the NRA does not like or support competitions, I disagree. They have to support and do support certain competitions. Remember my money comment, for all we can complain about the NRA they are a business and have budgets. The NRA cannot spend themselves out of business. We can always raise out fees (wait that is a non starter everyone will leave per this thread). Put yourself in the head of competitions, do you spend equal amounts on sport which are declining or growing. Remember your budget is set at a fixed cost. Your job is to show how great and how many participate in competitions It sucks when your sport is declining and is great when it is growing (3 gun).
I am sure each of you if you were honest and responsible for all of NRA shooting competitions would make the same decisions. The NRA is certainly without problems and needs to modernize but look at this thread. They make a simple change and this is not how many post long and how many notes saying they are "stupid".
Lets face facts if we want silhouette to grow or even be relevant we are the ones who are going to make it happen, not the NRA, not getting ride of Greg C, etc.

Ohh yeah I am a benefactor member of the NRA, TSRA and life member of USPSA and IHMSA. I have tried to support the organization in the sports I have and do shoot.

It's time for some new blood in the entire comp division Gregg. This isn't 1950.

I do understand and can agree the NRA competitions does need to at least move to the 1990Jerry G wrote:It's time for some new blood in the entire comp division Gregg. This isn't 1950.
But two things have you called and expressed or written a letter to the comp division stating your concerns? Second look at this thread how long it is on just changing the names and asking the match directors to enter the data. What do you think would happen if they really did modernize?
So far what I have seen is we want change get but do not change anything.....Kind of hard to do that....
So what do you want the comp to do they do not today? Please do not say promote the sports or say good by to GregC. Something specific? What one change...

Re: Classification Update
-They need to speed up match approval.
-They need to make 'shooting sports' a LOT quicker in updating match schedules. 3 to 4 months to get a match listed in the digital age is insane.
-They need to take a long hard look at what is given out to competitors as trophies and how many are given in each class. Come to some of the well attended shoots around the US and see how a great match is run and what the winners get.
-Competitions need to get a little ink in the 'Rifleman'. It ain't all politics and old guns.
That is my 2 cents and I'm sure many shooters could add some good stuff to the wish list.
I'm not trying to be a 'hard ass' Gregg but the comp division does need an update.

Re: Classification Update
-Brace for Rant- in a good kind of way
-Competitions need to get publicity. Everywhere. Video, News, social media, Sports Media. This helps the political factors also.
Shooting sports need the exposure so everyone knows they are a mainstream all American sport. And it is a sport. If I am exlpaining to a non-shooter, non-gun person (which I am surrounded by in the peoples republic of Mass.) I Always compare shooting sports what they are, Martial Arts. Everyone seems to get that connection.
Don't give me any ecuses about "shooting is boring to watch" bla bla bla..... Golf is teleivised.... talk about boring...
Here is an example on u-tube: nice video work! A series of shooters at Cowboy Lever Action. (this person also has Drone flown footage over Whittington) Boy, the mind races when you think what exciting footage someone could capture with a good lens and a drone during a match. NOT boring!
We need to get off our collective arses. and publicise our sport. ( so much worry about keeping track of Classifications)
o.k. back to practice nationals is comming fast.
