Your Remington 700

Well..........the 2009 Remington products catalog is out online. While several new 700 models are present, our Model 700 MS is not listed.

As a matter of fact they did not even chamber any 700's at all in .260 Rem. The only .260 I saw was a Model 7.

Why are they seemingly abandoning the .260 ???

Guess we will have to continue to build our own.

It would have been really hard for them to get the 700 MS through testing, approved by management, a marketing strategy devised and approved, and into production by now. Even getting it going by this time next year would be optimistic.

OK...........I will accept that explanation on the introduction of a new model. But what is the big deal with adding a .260 chambering to a couple of the existing models ?

Just bought a Savage 14 Classic in .308. Good looking rifle, floated barrel. Accu-trigger seems OK and Shilen makes drop in barrels, in .260. Will be my next purchase.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't 'hunting rifle' the class designed to bring new shooters into the sport? That to me means a guy can bring his actual hunting rifle to the range and not be completely intimidated by guys with custom rifles. I too would would like to see Remington introduce a hunter class silhouette rifle, here's what it would look like.
1. Standard 700 action, blued, lugs lapped.
2.Stainless barrel, magnum contour 25", built in the custom shop.
3. A good trigger set at 2.25 lbs from the factory.
4. New stock design, an DBM that holds 5 rounds and actually works good. Put a rollover cheek piece like on a 1712 on it. Synthetic.
5. Chambered in 260,7-08,308.
6. Make a left handed version as well.
7. Put extra quality control practices and inspections into the manufacturing process to insure overall quality.

Good point. Most likely Remington looked at the proposition (if they in fact did look at the proposition) and decided the amount they would sell was "not enough" Silhouette shooters are a rare breed and we represent a niche market...And we are a picky bunch. The requirements of our sport call for what would be considered extreme accuracy in a factory rifle. Building a mass produced rifle that would work well in all conditions, stand up to the amount of usage a dedicated silhouette shooter and turn in sub-moa groups would be a tough, expensive proposition

And if a factory could turn out this magic rifle the cost of tooling, marketing, etc spread over the small number of these expensive narrowly focused rifles would push the cost up there pretty close to a custom build....

It's not like I'm opinionated or anything but niche markets are where a company makes it's reputation. Competitive shooters saying, Hey, Remington is an accurate gun!", sells guns down at Fred's Sporting Goods. Don't think so, just ask all those guys around here buying Savages and doing some long range hunting.

He's what I think Remington should do; make a couple of hundred XR100s in 260 Remington and put Silhouette stock on it. It's already got an adjustable 40X trigger. Since the XR100 was retailing for about $900 in my area they ought to be able to do it for that. Might be even better if they could do it for $800. Call it the XR100MS and maybe chamber it in some other appropriate rounds as mentioned before.

Might even get the marketing guys to have various shooting types try them: long range shooters, hunters, F Class guys, maybe even a Master Class HP Silhouette shooter or two. Hey, how about a AAA shooter?

Oh, and too expensive to make just a few? How about all the action makers out there making accurate Remington clones and selling them. Then the rest of the action makers making other custom actions and selling them? Remington can't do it? They could have but didn't, that's why other shops are doing it and making money. Savage seems to have seen the light. Maybe they'll still be in existance when Remington is sold yet again.

Its true that Remington probably will not make what they don't think they will sell a lot of. But how many XP100 single shot thumbhole stocked rifles did they think they were going to sell? They could very well throw some stock items together and get something close if not perfect for what silhouette shooters need. They call the XP100 a target rifle but exactly what shooting competition is it for? I think Remington needs to look to Savage for direction. Does anyone recall Savages effort at the silhouette game? Savage is selling a competitive rifle in F class shooting. The big problem is that American business is more interested in listening to its stock holders rather than its costumers. That s part of the reason Oldsmobile is no longer in business after 100years of making cars and the Japanese are overtaking the market. For a limited production item from Remington you might try petitioning Grices Gunshop in PA. They have gotten Remington to make quite a few limited run Remington. I bought a 700ADL in 260 from them a few years ago

Evelio modified my rem 700 for me and I could not be more pleased with the results. He put a pharr stock and jackson trigger on it. Now it feels just like my Anschutz 1712. Added bonus, it shoots tighter groups with the new bedding. I have now shot 3 three matches with it and my aveage score went up 6 animals. The rifle is much more comfortable now.

Now, if someone could just tell me how to hold on chickens, I could actually post a decent score. I generally get twice as many turkeys as chickens.
