I'd definitely be interested in the results of that, since I'm starting to relax a bit about individually measuring every single component of every single highpower round. I'm currently not even mixing lots of the same brand of brass, much less manufacturers.

Oh... You might be a redneck if you live so far out in the country that schools get canceled due to muddy roads. Don't worry, Bob. They'll get asphalt out to your area soon, or at least tar and gravel.

None of will live long enough to see a paved road into CRC. It is so far out in the sticks you need to pack a lunch just to get there.

I wish I had a range report worthy of a gun magazine..or Dan's approval. But, here goes.


Today was the only chance in the next ten days I had to test my ammo. Rain, mud..who cares, I packed up and went anyway. Got there at 9 am to windy conditions. The roads were a mess again, no beer money for me next week either. Not another person showed up while I was there.

Winds were 12-15 mph in your face out of the NW-NE and always switching around. I made no attempt to adjust windage for it and just broke in the spot. All I wanted to see was elevation differences. The road down to the berms was too muddy so I walked each time to place my plywood target board. Once each time at pigs and turkeys the wind blew it down forcing me to walk down to set it back up during shot strings. Got a good walk in today.

To my surprise both the WW and PRVI loads were striking very close to the same elevation. I could not fire at the ram distance, the wind made it impossible to even stay on the 18" gong. My first attempt was at 200m first firing five WW loads, then five PRVI loads. At pigs (300m) I decided to fire an every other mix of loads. The wind was not letting up by the time I got to 385 M. Then my board falls over again mid string!

I decided to eat lunch and then head home. When I was done an eerie calm took place....dead still air. I decided to send my remaining PRVI test loads down at the freshly painted gongs instead. All were hit with five shots each using my WW ammo settings. Lastly I hit the ram gong with five quick shots just before the wind kicked up again. The through the scope photo looks to be around a 4 inch group at the right elevation. Not too shabby for 5 shots in minute or so. The rifle now has exactly 5213 rounds fired from that Douglas 26" barrel, it's still shooting good.


I have to admit, Jerry G. was right on about this one. I could see no big location differences using brass with less capacity shooting from the bench. Way to go, Grandpa!!

One last thing. I checked capacity of one each fire formed case with H335. WW still holds more with the difference being 4.3 grains this time. Interesting test.

I thought that truck looked familiar. I am surprised that you drove it down the highway. At least you took a pit crew with you.

Not me, I would not get in that junker on a real road. The snake of a dealer himself drove it to CRC. That '86 350 has a pretty mellow sound now like cherry bombs did in the 70's. Don't need no stinking muffler. The rumble will help keep the mice from taking it over.

Dennis, Don't go to CRC. It is 50 miles from nowhere.

There is a lot of HP shot in southern AZ.
