You can't compare yourself to anyone but yourself. What works for one person is totally inappropriate for you. Once past the basics of stance, ring height, hold...etc. Its experimentation for what makes it work for you. Thats why I always suggest (if your serious) to buy the best equipment you can afford and then spend a little more. You can always tweak the good stuff, sometimes you can't the cheaper stuff. If whoever is shooting master scores with a Marlin 39, that doesn't mean you'll do the same. In fact odds are, you won't be close and you'll be lucky to break 10. Fact is, you won't shoot like Miss Kitty or that 13yr old. You might be a AA for life, but that doesn't mean you quit trying to improve. You change your ammo, gun, scope and practice more. Then you might get hot and shoot that 3rd AAA score. Good luck to you.

It would be great if this forum had a reference section that explains the basics like why cheek weld is important or determining a good fit. If for no other reason, it would prevent you guys from having to rehash this information every time the uneducated, like me, ask.

sadly , it is such a personal game that gerealizations are not even general. it would be nice, but all it really needs to say is, try abunch of other peoples gear til you find something you like that fits and copy it.

I sense the need for a reference book that would put all the really good stuff about gun fit, stance, ammo, the mental game and all that stuff, along with some really witty anectedotes and first person "I was there" stories, pictures that show how it should be done and lots of pics of guns does, in fact, exist.....or not.

There are. There are many articles in NRA's Shooting Sports mag over the years that basically explained all the positions. Tubb (whatever you think of him) has published scores of videos and books on the subject. Over the years many of your top Olympic shooters has published books. Truth is, they give you the basics and tips that helped them. We all know these guys and gals have a leg up on us before they ever picked up a rifle or handgun. Take their advice, study your position and adapt what you can. THEN PRACTICE and shoot a real lot, then as Bill Parcells used to say, "you are, what your record says you are".

I finally got my scope height to 1.43 inch high on my CZ 452 American yesterday. Preliminary testing height in the basement says I still need a little more height from my original 1 inch. Maybe this October, Greg and his board will raise height limit to 2 inches like in HP. I went out to the rifle range to 0 at the chickens. I almost got it zeroed when Brad wonder over from the HP range to tell me the Silhouette range was closed due to being work day at the club. I plumb forgot. Our silhouette range has only one side the has a solid berm with tree line down the other side. The work crews were working on the tree line side being a safety issue. It is a standard safety rule we have and I plum forgot being a work day for getting in member work hours. The stock butt now sits a little lower and more into the shoulder area too. Time will tell.

The measurements are the same for HP and SB, no more than 2" for Standard rifle and no more than 1 1/2 for hunter class.

I shoot both hunter and Std with same rifle. Need rule change to raise SB hunter height to 2 inch. Make everything even steven w/o having medical excuse for SB hunter to go over 1-1/2 inches.

Greg called me last week and I got the feeling that raising the height to 2" for hunter was over looked in their November rules meeting. Said nothing has changed. I didn't bother to ask for details in their discussion, if there was one. I wish he would join a 101 e-mail class.

I shoot a Hunter Rifle however this year I told our guys that I was not going to run a Hunter class everything would Silhouette. Hunter class guns could move up to Silhouette if they want too. I was talked out of it by two guys that need Hunter class Slam legs, good argument. Have put in the NRA sanction request for both. Once there slams are clear shoot our club it will be with a Silhouette rifle.

We have a afternoon match under Club Rules that does not need a special gun to compete sucessfully. 3 times the turn out of Regulation Silhouette. Same with neighbor clubs, stock out of the box rifles dozens of shooters. Tight equipment rules have helped CLA Silhouette grow so fast.

Unfortunately, because the differences between the 2 classes are disappearing, most shooters in our area shoot 1 gun in both matches
