Re: Affordable upgrades?
OO...question, does your injury include neck? My response is that you need to get the rifle up a little higher for a more erect stance. I say that only because the subconcious may be picking up any slight pain from the neck being in an uncomfortable position. While I agree with both John and Tony on the air rifle.... a cheap way to monitor that is with a Daisy 727 or 747 pistol and a low power scope...it is unforgiving with regard to trigger control, which again can be a result of nerve damage in the neck. Using an air pistol with a scope allows you to watch the pellet in flight na the trajectory really shows the inconsistent trigger movement.
Another thing that might help is a different vest, but before you buy that, try some of either Hardscrabble or Marco Sanchez, there are several shooters in your area with both types. Both are designed for silhouette, by silhouette shooters. Each has its advantage and disadvantage....depending on what(smallbore, high power, cold or warm climates), how much and where you are shooting.
What bank did you start on at CBC, somehow I missed picking up on the hat!

Neck injury? No, don't think so -- severe concussion, four broken ribs, punctured lung, torn shoulder rotator cuff (fixed by surgery)..... but I bulged a disc in my neck back in 1990 shooting high power with the National Guard -- bloody M-14s! But I think my neck's okay, when I'm not trying to break it... Head's not erect enough, hey? Hmmm, gonna work on that. Bring the butt higher in the shoulder?
What bank did I start at CBC? Don't know.... second day I started on turkeys, I think.... had a miserable first day, but fair the second....including a 28... not bad since I couldn't hit turkeys and rams!
Where does one shop for a Marco Sanchez vest?
Motorcycles are cruel mistresses!

Re: Affordable upgrades?
I'd agree with all of the above posters. Rifle fit is all you should really have to worry about, given the quality of the gear you've got.
I am beginning to think balance is as important as weight - too much can be as bad as too little. The desired outcome for me is a comfortable set up that can be shot all day long.
I noticed the 1710 looks to have the standard hard (read slippery) factory butt plate. That'd be one of the first things I'd look at - cheap and easy and reversible. But I'll have to let you decide on trimming that barrel.
regards,
Nigel.
ps the other thing is to buy and use as much practice ammo as you can

Re: Affordable upgrades?
OO, Your head looked erect...it is the whole "pulled in the shell turtle head" look that I see. I tend to notice that type of stance, as it is hard for me to not to do with some rilfe/scope combinations. Much of that has to do with mounts/stock configurations. That being said, I agree with a word that Nigel mentioned in his post...BALANCE.
While many of the top shooters harp on Natural Point of Aim (NPA) what they really mean is balance. In trying to describe it in this forum, I will say that I can lay my rifle on my left hand (I shoot with an open hand, two fingers forward and thumb back, and I am right handed) in my shoulder, with my head on the comb and not touch the rifle in any other spot (not even have my tirgger hand up) and the rifle will stay in position. With the rifle like that I should be pointing at my target, back to the most basic form of NPA. Without going into discussions about the correct position, because everyone is different, some with or without injuries, good ole arthur (arthritis) and other body shape/size challenges I would say that finding that balanace point is probably the most important thing in any standing shooting.
Now for a Marco Sanchez vest, pm or email with your size, I should have a few coming to Winnsboro, he has had some difficulty on his production end (Juarez, has some problems!!!) keeping seamtresses from disappearing.

Re: Affordable upgrades?
An upgrade could be to change the striker spring in your bolt on the 1710 for a faster locktime. Plus the spring really wouldn't run you to much.

What time do they start the matches at the Asheville Rifle and Pistol Club. I would like to attend one. I live a couple of hours from Ashville. If possible post a link to their web site. I would like to take a look at the schedule.
Thanks,
Lefty

Man...that puts a whole new perspective on "worrying about score," doesn't it? So many of the world's people have real, and not piddly "score" problems. To be born an American citizen is the best luck and good fortune anyone could possibly have... (I'll send you my size...)Innocent wrote:

Balance? I can pass your test with my 1710, but the Standard doesn't even come close.... I'm mulling the barrel shortening option...
"Disappearing seamstresses......." Can't stop thinking about that.... Awful.....

Border towns are not where you want to be now, unless you are suicidal. Not sure what Marco is sending, over, I spoke with him afew days ago and he said he still has three of four left, plus I am aware of one slightly used ostrich one that may be up for sale ( the cape buffalo skin won out on the contest between ostrich and CB)...
