For a new rifle I will also say the CZ. Personally I don't like the trigger, but with the trigger replaced it will do as a low dollar shooting stick, but it's no Anschutz. Another choice would be one of the new Marlin's, or the Ruger 77-22's which is what I started with.

Which trigger? The 452 trigger and 453 trigger aren't even in the same league.

I'm sure there are plenty of rifles out there for $500 or less. How many of them would be good for silhouette, though? I'm not trying to say the CZ is the only choice. But I've no problem waving their flag, as they are priced well below what you get. Dollar for dollar they're very hard to beat. And I'm being quite sincere, if you know of others, list them. I don't see the point in waiting to see if anyone else mentions any that have already come to mind. If you know of some that might fit the bill, don't hold back. Maybe others will have the same ones in mind, maybe they won't. But you keep saying there are others, so, what are they?

I don't have much experience with many rifles for silhouette. I can tell you that I have a cz452 silhouette and my son has the american... both are great rifles and definitely got this girl hooked into the sport and saving for some bling lol

I'm still shooting a stock Ruger 10/22, and that little gun has taken me all the way to AAA class. Granted, the stock trigger needs to be fixed or replaced. But that's so easy and cheap even a caveman (who's good at jig saw puzzles) can do it! :)

My vote goes for the CZ 452. I put the brooks triger Kit on mine and the pull is 2# 2oz with no cxreep. I have only been shooting silhouette for 1 year. But durning The match this weekend I moved from B class to A class in 1 shoot by shooting a AA score. I shoot a 452 American with a BSA 8-32X44 target dot scope. The scope was around $100.

I still use a very accurate 77/22 Ruger with a 12x Leupold. Just had to tune the trigger some. I had another that would not shoot good at all, it's gone.

New Rifle-CZ 452 Silohuette. adjust trigger to 2lbs and go.........
or
Used-Annie 1416.

A 10/22 or 77/22 with ammo they like are good too.

It seems all the new Savage's with the Accuttrigger are non-tapered barrels, so I guess they're out.......too bad.

Is the 10/22 carbine preferable to the long barrel version sold by Wal-Mart?

Not if you're going to keep the factory barrel and use it. Those things are seriously light, so the longer barrel helps a bit for everyone but kids who have trouble holding the weight up.

Not all of the Savage models with the Accutrigger have non-tapered barrels. Check out this Mark II Classic.

I haven't ever seen one of that particular model in person, but it looks like it would be good for the silhouette game. It looks nice, has a fairly high comb (though not quite up to the bore line) that's parallel to the bore, and the Accutrigger. The problem is that its retail price (~$400) is going to be right there with a CZ 453 and slightly above a CZ 452. It even has a 24" barrel on it, which is an advantage on the CZs. With the CZs being proven guns, it would be hard to advise a new shooter to go with the Savage and have them take the risk, though. I would rather nudge them toward the CZs that I already know work great for silhouette and wait until I hear more about the Savage being used for silhouette by other shooters.

If someone wanted to go quite a bit cheaper than a CZ, they could go for the Mark II G, which is fairly easy to get for under $200 out the door. It's smaller and lighter (good for kids, not so much so for adults) and has an Accutrigger, but it's seriously ugly. It's cheap, though.

That Savage Classic looks like a nice rifle. Is it all American made or a foreign parts/mfg. hybrid?

The current Savage rimfire line came about maybe twelve years ago when they acquired Lakefield Arms based in Lakefield, Ontario, Canada. The rimfire line is still made in Lakefield.
