I do not drink any alcohol, tea, or coffee and only drink soft drinks a few times a year. I teach Junior High Sunday School at our Church. I do not drink alcohol because I just do not like it. It is not against my religious beliefs as long as a person does not drink to get drunk. In Winnsboro, we stay at the same Hotel that "the drunks that call each other out " stay at and we do not want to stay anywhere else. They are all quiet as a mouse past 9 P.M. because they all want to shoot their best the next day just like us. The Hoopla on this forum is all part of the buildup for the Southern Nationals. If you want to go to a real Match, be in Winnsboro, LA. the first full weekend in June every year. The Huddlestons will be there. Winnsboro is the only match I know of that includes prayer as part of the opening ceremonies as it should be. Winnsboro Gun Club and Benton Gun Club are two clubs that have done a tremendous amount for the Junior Shooters. Kids seemed to have too much idle time at the 2007 Nationals. There is too much going on and not much time between relays for them to get bored at Winnsboro and Benton.

The only time I have actually seen drunks make horses rears of themselves were at the Calcutta auctions at a trapshoot. Get em drunk and they spend more money. I would have been embarrased to have my wife or kids there for those events and that is one of the reasons I do not shoot them anymore. I have no problem at all bringing my wife and kids to smallbore silouette matches.
Kevin
DWL right on. I have given this some thought lately. I keep coming back for the people and the shooting challenge.

SG sports are probably more popular due to
- instant gratification
- far less studious an atmosphere
- an old boys network
- relatively easy to do well
- somewhat more politically or socially favourable
I remember a former 3p shooter on the Canadian olympic team once said
"...it all starts with smallbore 3p and goes downhill from there" and I
figure SB Silhouette is not too far down the hill of difficulty. So be proud
that you're in an exclusive group !

I know what you mean by trap shooters having poor muzzle discipline. When I was in the Air Force I shot on a skeet team and there was a big rivalry between us and the trap shooters. One day our team decided to shoot some birds over on the trap range. My pal, 'Trim Jim Walker - The Motor Madman', strapped on a Browning 9mm in addition to his over/under. One of the trap shooters asked him, "What's that (pistol) for?" Trim Jim gave this deadpan reply, "Trap shooter control."

I have reprinted excerpts from this post in Club House -> Midsouth Classic Early Check-in Request, since I feel some opinions expressed here are grossly exaggerated and based solely on narrow mindedness. I do not wish to rehash old topics but I feel this will be a continual problem until some people understand why the Clubhouse was erected.

Silhouette Shooting
WOW
Well I guess it's my time to express my opinion on this subject, especially since I am guilty of making several comments about alcohol on this forum.
I started shooting silhouette in 1973, ( 34 years ) I have shot in pretty much every state in USA and also in Mexico, and have yet to see a " DRUNK" person on the firing line or handling a gun in an unsafe manner nor have I ever seen any fights or any loud arguments where I felt uncomfortable.
I travel several thousand miles a year, and of course spend several hundred dollars to make as many matches as I can. Why do I do it ???? First I love to shoot silhouette, and second I love to see and visit with the friends I made over the years, and only get to see them once or twice a year.
I don't know if any of you remember the first NRA High Power National Champ. held in Arizona, they actually had several beer kegs sitting right next to the water coolers. Have you ever shot in Nogales Mexico, they actually have an open bar about 50ft. behind the firing line, and they drink all thru the match. Do I appove of this kind of behavior ?????
All I can say is that there were several families and kids all over the place and they were all having a hell of a good time, including the shooters of course.
I am pretty sure a lot of you shot in El Paso, one of their firing line commands, is (please do not bring any alcohol beverages to the firing line)
Again there were kids and wives all over the range, and they were having a better time that we were. Again I never saw anybody conducting themselves in a manner that I would consider unsafe.
Now going to matches in USA and the BS being posted on this forum about drinking and challenges, made by myself, and my dear friends David, James, John, Mary, Chuck, George, and others that have been posted, I have to say like Mr. Mc Lemore stated earlier it is really a bunch of B.S. to try to get us all in the mood. None of these bets ever get to take place once you are at the match.
Also like Bobby mention, all of us trouble makers and hard drunks are in bed no latter than 8:30 maybe 9:00 I wonder why????
I personally do not approve of any alcohol or any other substance being used while the match is going on. But folks, there is nothing I enjoy more than sharing a drink and a good cigar with my friends after all the shooting is over with, and all guns have been put away.
Some of these stories that you read about getting kick out of a joint or getting in any kind of trouble, always happened either days before or after the match, and of course they are highly exaggerated. It

Well said Evelio!
If I did not enjoy the BS and seeing friends at the matches, I would not even do this sport and have more time to devote to hunting and fishing and other hobbies that I have aquired in my late stages of life.
I do not apologize for any of my actions in the past or in the future, I just like to have a good time. If you are offended by some of the banter on this forum, DO NOT READ IT!!!!
As Evelio stated, it is mostly Bull$hit and anyone that has traveled to matches with us knows this. If you have not traveled away to another match other than you own club match, I suggest that you do it ASAP and you will be both amazed and pleased with the reprobates that you meet along the way (not to mention certain sandbaggers from Alba and other vicinities in Texas!) I I do not pick on you or BS you, then you know that I do not care to enteract with you!
See all in Little Rock!!!!

You refer, no doubt, to the four letter word "Work"?Jason wrote:Uttering that name on this forum is grounds for serious punishment, Mary.

I have been to many nationalmatches and the competetor meeting was just about like all of them.
The meeting should be structured and not just a free-for-all. The commetee seems to do whatever the want and I don't even know who most of them are.
There were too many awards handed out at the nationals in years past. The number of awards should be based on past numbers in each class.
I have heard our sport is dying many years now but it seems like we just keep chugging away. There are quite a few junior shooters at the matches so I think the future is OK unless something else changes.
Keep the matches fun and us old farts shouldn't come down on the young shooters unless there is realy wrong.
my 2 cents worth.
