Re: Newbie questions
Don't think a 7-08 won't ring a ram because it will. I have even seen a ram rung with a 6.5 right before being rung the next shot by a 7-08 even after the 6.5 loosened it up. If the targets are set right the 6.5 shouldn't ring as many as you might think.

For that matter a 6mm will take rams if set right, just ask Tubbs.

Here we go.....
I see this is going to turn into a pissing contest so.....
About 72" depending on what I have drank lately... Beer produces higher pressures and perhaps a little better distance.

I might have to build a custom .277 just to confuse you guys and have something new to argue about.

For what it's worth. Lapua makes a 6.5 scenario at 139 grains that will drift 30% less at rams than the 7mm pills. The higher ballistic-c on the 6.5's are why most if not all new shooters to hp silhouette go the .264 route.
They kick less and go where you point them more dependably.

And then there's always the 6x47 option with 115 Dtac's. Wind drift comparable to the 6.5's with much less recoil, 2nd cartridge from the left.

Here we go again. The bottom of bottom lines is this, this is the winners circle O, if you want to find your ass standing in it shoot a 6.5 of some kind. No matter what the goatru, some snake, or anyone else tells you. In the last say ten years name a national, regional, or state match that wasn't won by some 6.5.

That's not the whole story though. You have to factor in velocity as well.Merlin wrote:Lapua 139 = .578 BCBigfoot wrote:For what it's worth. I'm not picky. I shoot both and they each exceed everything I need for silhouette.

Re: Newbie questions
Merlin, I am sure this thread will not change your mind but BC as listed by both manufactures is probably true at some velocity. But I believe the manufactures are going to list their best numbers which is probably the fastest. For example for 143 Sierra 6.5 the following is from Sierra:Merlin wrote:Lapua 139 = .578 BCBigfoot wrote:For what it's worth. 162 AMAX = .625 BC
.264 142 .291 .595 @ 2850 fps and above
.580 between 2850 and 2400 fps
.575 between 2400 and 2050 fps
.550 @ 2050 and below
Not sure about everyone else but I do not want to shoot a 142 in silhouette doing about 3000. I am shooting down around .575.
IMHO 308 and 7-08 are great cartridges but the ship has sailed on these cartridges being the most popular and the best for silhouette. Just like NRA high-power you still see a few 308/7-08 shootings can they win yes. But 99% shoot 223. The same is in silhouette, the bullets are generally better, the recoil less (you can calculate this online), most shooters also do not shoot 162 at CPT.
