What is your brass cleaning style and how often do you?

More expensive to feed, but worth it.

What is your brass cleaning style and how often do you?

Post by Dee »

Just wondering what some of you do regarding tumbling or other cleaning methods for your brass and how often you do it?

Thow them into a Dillon CV 2001 with corncob for however long it takes then
Image
into a Dillon CM 200 Case/Media Sperator and roll around and get the cleaning media out opf the brass then
Image
dump into something
Image
to keep them separated from the rest of the "stuff."

YMMV.... 8)

Dee,
Up until recently I used the same set up as Merlin. However, after listening to Jason, Tony and others I switched to the Stainless Steel media process and all I can say is WOW!!! my brass is a lot cleaner inside and out ( http://www.stainlesstumblingmedia.com/ ). I clean after every match, unlike the Guru who doesn't clean (I like my brass shiney :D )

I clean and trim every time I reload.

I will have to try the SS media.

I use the s/s system its really awsome...nothing gets em clean inside and out like this stuff and if you shoot Black Powder also this is the stuff you want to use. I highly recomend it.

Has anyone used the stainless steel media in a vibratory cleaner like the Dillon pictured ? If so how were the results ? Thanks, Kelly Landis.

The media + water is too heavy for a vibratory tumbler. You need a rotary tumbler like the Thumblers Tumbler model B or the home made equivalent.

Looks simple enough, and I'm thinking Kim never uses the mixer anyway, sooo...

Thanks for the input everyone. That is some damn shiny brass you got there Baja! Merlin that is a hell of a lot of brass you have there! Something tells me that its not all you have for some reason

I guess I should have included the annealing time frames all of you use as well. I'm thinking a few more shots max before I should get them annealed. Don't want to wait till I am splitting necks.

Oh and I guess I could look into trimming too

Trimming cleaning and most important. Bring enough ammo! :ymcowboy:

I think I've got some Abita amber in the fridge Dee. Just in case you're in the vicinity!

I clean my resized brass with corn cob more to remove the lube, than anything, but may leave it in long enough to "shiney it up" a little. When I'm out testing ammo, I've written on the case with a Magic Marker, so if I want to clean it off, I run the cases through a Lee decapping die (if there are more than about 20 cases) or use a bent paper clip, to remove cob from the primer pocket. Then I put the cases into another polisher filled with pulverized walnut shell (lizard bedding) This could be happening all at the same time, as I have 4 polishers. If there was a lot of shooting, It COULD be done in a Dillon, but usually it's in one of my RCBSs.
That picture of what happens with the ss-liquid tumbler and those tarnished cases has got me thinking about THAT a lot harder now. I WAS thinking it was just more expense, and I'm mot really impressed by the extra shine...'til now.
Have fun,
Gene

Well lets remove any lingering doubts you may have from your mind... The best cleaning method I've found bar none!!!!!!

I just finished cleaning these from our match today. Mixed in are a number of .223 cases I found at the range that were all weathered and looking real bad, stained, dull, etc. Look at them now, like new!!!!
