I read somewhere years ago that the rpm's increased once the bullet left the barrel for a short distance then slowing down due to the friction of the rifleing grooves on the surface of the jacket, not so?......

Once a bullet exits the muzzle there are no forces to accelerate it forward or rotationally. Something can only accelerate if there's a force acting on it. A barrel's rifling accelerates the bullet's rotation as the bullet accelerates down the bore. Once the bullet exits the muzzle, there is no force to accelerate it, so it is spinning fastest the instant it is no longer in contact with the rifling. An exception to that is 22LR match ammo. It reaches max speed about 19" down the barrel and then begins to decelerate when the friction between bullet and bore is greater than the gas pressure behind the bullet. The only force accelerating the bullet once it exits the muzzle is gravity. Well, some have argued that the high velocity gas that exits the muzzle along with the bullet can accelerate the bullet a small amount. But, the gas pressure, the force acting on the bullet while it is traveling down the barrel, dissipates very rapidly, after the bullet exits the muzzle, as the high pressure gas expands into the lower pressure air around it.

Awesome conditions at the range again today,Trent. 25-28 degrees, sunny and NO wind. I was lazy and set everything at pigs. Did not want to mess with the rams today. I cleaned the rail five times before I had enough for this year.

DAMN I AM JEALOUS!!! Today I ripped out the flooring and sub-floor in our 1963 Shasta camper trailer and started putting in the new floor. Fun Fun! I am heading out in the morning to see if I can shoot at some animals with some real fur on them. I've yet to get a deer this year.

Sorry I didn't make it out today Bob, I shot 2 rounds of skeet with my 410 before my shoulder gave up. The wind was blowing like crazy at golden gun club at noon, can't believe it was calm at CRC.

The 139 GMX's should take rams quite well, no? I've wanted to try some solids with my 6BR, but have been concerned about ram damage. Did you notice any on the ram(s) you hit?

Once again, thanks much for doing the legwork and sharing your video's, they've been reviewed numerous times so far. I'm thinking there's a Casio camera in my future, what a great way to study bullets in flight. Do you think the Casio like yours it the best low-cost option for high-speed video?

We didn't notice any damage from the GMX's but we weren't really paying attention when we were picking up the targets. The wind had come up, it had gotten a lot colder, and we were in a hurry.

There are several Casio cameras that will shoot various rates of high speed video. Mine is the EX-ZR200. When I was looking it had the capabilities I was looking and hit my price point.

I'm working up four more videos, one for each animal. Each segment will be longer and will show misses, as much of the bullet flight as possible, and the animal falling to the ground. These won't be as much fun to watch as the preview, but then the movie never is...

Speaking of gun racks I made those four on the line you see ten years ago. They are heavy but I have arrived at the range to see all four actually blown over from the high winds that frequently hit out there. I had to pin them all down with bent rebar stakes. Still we had members move them for unknown reasons, hence the signs on each end.

Ha Ha....parking for 80 rifles. I had high hopes of one day hosting a big match at CRC. The only time I have seen them all full is when the long range belly shooters hold their matches.

Pop Quiz.....how many complete revolutions did that 150 gr. Match King make before striking the turkey? From the case mouth.

Bob I was once told and I cant remember where I heard this but...a bullet will continue to spin at the same rate as to what ever the barrels twist rate is untill impact no matter how far it travels. If I find the exact source of this surprising info I will post it..

The bullet's rate-of-spin starts to slow the instant it exits the muzzle. But, it slows at a much, much slower rate than the bullet's forward motion. As a result, the bullet becomes more stable as it flies down range until its velocity drops below about 1,250 fps. At that velocity nose drag becomes so high the bullet becomes destabilized unless it is initially spun at much higher rate-of-spin than is normal for HP bullets.

Thanks Dan. I thought I had that about right. Still find that very odd but what isn't when it comes to bullet travel.
