sight setting question
It's been a lot of years since I last shot HP, but I've decided its time to give it another try. A big part of the problem is no place to practice those distances.
So I could use some good guesses as to sight adjustments in between animals. I'll be using a .243 with 100 grain boat tail spire points. This is my varmit/back up deer rifle, so please don't tell me the combo is too small - I know that.
The gun is sighted for 200 meters. How many clicks should I adjust for the remaining three distances? Close will be good. I'll blame the spotter for all the misses.
Thanks.
Mark

Re: sight setting question
If you are running at about 2900fps and you have a 1-10 twist barrel you should be at about +2.75moa for Pigs, +5.25moa for Turkeys and +9.75moa at the Ram line.
This should get you close. This is based on a 400ft elevation.

Mark,
Tell us the exact bullet you are using and MV. If you don't know the MV, let us know the powder and powder weight and we can get you in the ballpark, probably even better.
I'm thinking we can get you to 1st base at least.
...Oh, what scope are you using and what is the MOA per click.

Re: sight setting question
With the Hornady 100gr BTSP (reported BC .405) and a near max load of Varget, I'm getting about 2800fps muzzle velocity out of a Sako Forester L579 in 243 Winchester. That should get us pretty close on the calculations.

Re: sight setting question
Thanks for the replies.
My load uses Sierra 100 gr. SPBT hunting bullets on top of 42.8 grains of H-4831 SC powder. This is not a max load, but it is very accurate in this particular rifle.
The rifle is a Rem. 700, but the scope leaves a lot to be desired as far as Sil. shooting goes. It is an old, made in the USA, Redfield 3-9x hunting scope. The adjustments are friction rather than clicks. And if I remember correctly, the graduations are either .5 or 1 inch.
I just need a ballpark guess on MOA adjustments at the three far animals. I'll do my final scope adjustments on swingers prior to the match.
Thanks again

Re: sight setting question
Mark,
Based on your reported 42.8 grains of H4831 SC launching a 100-gr SPBT, your 243 load's estimated MV is 2,975 fps. With a zero at Chickens, below are the sigh-settings.
Range -- Sight-settings
(m) -- (MOA)
200 -- 0
300 -- 2.5
385 -- 5.1
500 -- 9.1
