More expensive to feed, but worth it.

Berger 140 VLD

Post by shakes »

Anybody out from the dark side thats using the Berger 140 VLD target bullets in there .260 for ram loads. Im interested in trying some and wonder what powder and grain to try. I've got some Varget, RL 19, and some 4350. Shooting the Sierra 142's right now with 43gr of RL 19. Wanting to see if the VLD would be better with say 38 or 39 grain of Varget. Would also like to try the Lapua 139's but affaid if they shoot really good I'm going to wind up having to buy 500 and those puppies are $$$$.

You should indeed be careful with trying those Lapua 139s.. just like with the 123s. They shoot so well that you get sucked into buying a bunch of them. I don't think I do any better with ringing rams than those shooting the 142 Sierras, but the Lapuas shoot really, really well.

Shakes, have you checked the prices of Berger bullets lately compared to Lapua? I just checked Graf and Sons and some of those Berger bullets are up to $45 a box and $201.99 if you buy 500 (may not be the same bullet buy they are 140gr).

Lapua 139gr are $334.59 per 1000 and $39.34 per hundred.

Powder Valley has the Lapua 139gr for $317.81 per 1000 and 36.03 per hundred plus shipping charges.

Berger bullets are in the $40 range and they show a price of $180.71 for 500 plus shipping charges which could be substantial when you have bullets shipped unless you can talk them into shipping them to you in a Flate Rate Box.

DOH!!!! 8-} Tony your right, I need to put my reading glasses on :-B . I looked right over the fact that they are per 1000 not 500. That does'nt make em bad at all puts them less than the moly coated Sierra's and I know of a gentleman who lives in PeEll who can moly coat them for me. I might buy 100 of each 108's, and 139's and give a try. I can always sell the moly coated sierra's to somebody. Thanks Tony.

Shakes,

You're getting good advice about the Laupa 139's vs the 140 Bergers. But, to put a "Smashing" picture to those words, here's one for you; the 140 Berger is on the left and a 139 Scenar on the right. I know which one I'd use on rams.   But, Dr. Mc Alice has me thinking that those hard-azz, 6.5mm 140 SST's need to be smashed. Anybody have any 6.5mm, 140-gr SST's they want smashed? PM if willing to have a few sacrificed on that alter of ram knock-down research. :D Powder Valley has them for $25.87/100.

I am shooting 34 gr of varget behind my 142s. You might want to take another look at using 38 gr.
