New to high power, suggested quantities of brass, etc.

More expensive to feed, but worth it.

New to high power, suggested quantities of brass, etc.

Post by Seamus O'Grady »

I'm having a high power rifle put together and need to purchase initial requisite amounts of brass, powder, bullets, primers, etc.

I figure I need to buy at least 300 pieces of brass to start. Any suggestions appreciated, including sources for purchases.

Also what is recommended for dies? I'm going with a 6.5 x 47.

Thank all.

For the brass, check out http://www.brunoshooters.com, for the bullets check out http://www.powdervalleyinc.com, as for the powder, I would try a local spot to avoid the hazmat charge, ask one of the local Washington shooters. I was getting 500 count bullets from powdervalley, but the last time I was on their web-site, they were offering 100ct and 1000ct. FWIW nice choice on the 6.5x47.

I bought some 6.5 x 47 brass and the cost was outragous and takes a small primer. You might want to look into reworking some 243 brass. I don't know how much you shoot but 300 would seem to be plenty for the brass. I bought 1,000 bullets and have around 5,000 primers. 8 lbs of Varget powder should be a good start.

If you want to shoot the state match using the same gun for both classes, only having 300 brass will be cutting it close as there are 240 shots for score. I tried it last year and only having 60 more for sight-in and practice for both (or all three if you go down and shoot Friday) wasn't nearly enough. I ended up taking components with me and loading up some more at Gary's house on Saturday night. I don't know where to get the 6.5x47 brass, but Powder Valley is a great place to get bullets as well as powder. The only places we have close for powder that I know of are Adventure Sports over in Lynnwood (sometimes high prices) and there's Kesselring's up north but they always seem to be out of what I want. Steve and the rest of the boys down south might have a better idea of what's available down there.

Check Graf's and Sons for 6.5X47L brass.....As for quanities of compoments, buy 150 % of what you think you need in the way of brass.....buy a pound of the favorite powders (seem to be Varget, Reloader 15, Vhita Vhouri N140 and N150) as well as 100 each of the different weights of bullets commonly used in that caliber (Lapua 108, 123, and 139 grain and Sierra Match Kings in 107, 123, and 142 grain weights) and you'll have enough to develop loads and break in your new barrell....of course you could take the easy way out and get a starting point from a buddy that shoots the same caliber....There are several die makers, none bad. RCBS, when they first started making their dies in 6.5X47L sent them out with the standard sized decapping pin...they may still be doing so...the 6.5X47L has a smaller, "benchrest type" flash hole. Sinclair/Wilson Hand Dies are very accurate and I see by the new Sinclair catalog that Wilson now offers their stainless micrometer seater dies and neck dies in the 6.5X47L...lot's of choices....
