Paul,
Have you tried this bottom plate addition for bullets returning to the firing line? Centerfire ammo might return the bullets towards the shooters, smallbore might not have enough energy?

Just wondering??

Charlie,

We have this plate a 100 meters only right now and have not needed to add them to the others. The lower plate is actually below the lowest rail so you have to shoot pretty low to hit it. The other three stands are the same except for the lower plate is straight up and down and does not return the targets to the front of the rail. The range we use for smallbore silhouette is a 22 LR only range, you are not even allowed to shoot 22 mag or either of the 17 rimfires. I know that no matter what design you come up with someone allways has a better idea. My stands have been in use for 9 year with no splash back to the firing line that I know of.
I am sure everyones design has good and bad points, like they say can't please all of the people all of the time.
Later, Paul

Thanks for everybodys help and suggestions. We would like to put some of everbody's idea's into use but what I found out last night at the range is that the person in charge of designing the traps did not want to be put in charge of making them and he'd allready started welding and cutting the metal and that any suggestions that don't fit "HIS IDEA" are wrong and "nothing will get built and you guy's wont have a place to shoot" kind of attitude. So we decided as a commitee that we would mock up his idea on the chicken stands and have a live fire practice at it to see what works and what doesnt work with him overseeing the whole shabang. Then he can see with his own eyes that his idea might need to bee modified a tad bit. At least were making some kind of progress with this issue. Thanks for everybody's support. :D

I have a range at home with a metal backstop- and designed with an overhang to catch upwards splatter. No way to get in to pick the animals up.

What I have found works best is a magnet on a pole I got a Harbor Freight on sale for about $5. The magnet is powerful enough it can be inconvenient to pry off the animals if the magnet is on the main body. I now try and latch onto the edge and drag them out.

Also-- I would be concerned with the design of the return "slide" as designed as it will increase lead splatter in front of the range. not much of a risk at 40 meters- but I would assume you will sometime have someone standing closer and firing into it ...
If you really want that return feature- make it a V trough with a verticle face and pivot it at the bottom. , so it tips "open" to retrieve the targets.

Did no one read what I have posted the return slide is at 100 meters ONLY and as with most range no one is allowed to shoot except from the firing line. So 100 meters is as close as you get to it. We have used this stand for since 1999 with no problems or complaints.

I understand this is not an issue at your range and at 100 meters.

I try to anticpate what peope will be tempted to do- rules or not, and
good ideas may be implemented ---- poorly--- as some people lack common sense.

Good luck, Paul Freeman

Unfortunately this is a problem we will all face in one form or another as development moves toward our ranges. There is less open space to play in all the time.
