Can Someone I.D. this powder?

Post by TheBugFather »

This is the powder used in Hornady's Subsonic 30-30 load.

Anyone have a guess as to what it is?

Thanks!

Dennis,

A “guess” is it looks like Clay Dot from Alliant powder. This is a guess only and should not be used to make a reloading decision. On a broader guess it looks like a flake pistol powder with a color identifier. Again, only a guess to answer your question, in no way is it reloading guidance.
Reloading information comes from published reloading data not folks guessing at questions on a forum - that’s my disclaimer.

Thanks, I understand the reloading caution.
Please, if anyone else is able to ID this powder.
Thanks, Dennis

I have no idea what that powder is but if I was going to develop a light 30-30 load I would try Trail Boss powder.
It's a known powder and there is data available.

Thanks Rick.

Rick, I am more curious as to what a Manufacturer came up with for a factory load.

Please keep the ID’s coming.
Thanks, Dennis

It was a 175 grain bullet and about 8.5 to 8.7 grains of powder.

Thanks, Dennis

It probably some special blend powder that Hornady uses and not anything available over the counter
It’s a long shot but a call to Hornady would solve the mystery
