What 357 velocity for PC and CLA

Post by c4p6t7r188 »

You all are a lot more experienced and smarter than me, so I'm hoping to take a short cut!

I just picked up a 24" barrel 357 rifle and I'm ready to reload, but I'm not sure what would be under/overpower for things.

PC:
I have titegroup with 125gr XTP bullets with small pistol primers
CLA:
I have H110 with 180gr XTP bullets and small pistol magnum primers. I know 180gr isn't needed for all animals, but I would like to keep it basic.

Any help would be appreciated, telling me to get a 30-30 for CLA without sending me money doesn't help

I was also wondering about some load data for CLA as well for my wife's gun. It is a marlin 1894 with a 20 inch octagon barrel. Any help would be appreciated. I have some h-110, lil gun and tite group. With hornady 158 and 180 bullets.

I have the same marlin 20" oct barrel. 140gr hornady xtps over 7.0gr of HP-38, small mag primers and a heavy crimp have produced decent accuracy from my rifle.

For PC your 125gr going 1040 - 1100’ish. Your Titegroup powder should work splendid for that.

For CLA the load you use for PC will work just fine on chickens. With the 180gr bullet whatever load is most accurate with your components between 1400-1500fps, for the other three animal. If you are loading for a 1873 reproduction in .357 I would stay more in the 1300fps neighborhood with the 180’s although 1500’ish is certainly obtainable with published data.

You will get various opinions about any cartridge choice (that’s what makes things fun) and frankly varying results with about any caliber of choice from one range or one day to the the next; also part of what makes silhouette so fun. What matters most is participating in and enjoying this great sport. You will be in good company with those .357’s
