25-20 LOAD
HI STEEL CHICKEN FANS,
i have a marlin cl 25-20, looking for a sweet load using hornady, 60, 75 gn bullets, or speer 75 gn, bullets, or rem 86 gn bullets. i have a load of of win 680-11.0gns over a rem 86 gn bullet, and it makes quite a ding on my steel target. i do not want to take it to a match and mess a target up, so i need a load with, win680, 4227, hs6, tightgroup. thanks...dan222
this for pistol cartridge

Re: 25-20 LOAD
Dan
I have shot a 25-20 Marlin 1894cl for about 7 years and after MANY loads I have settled on two. For a jacketed 86 grain bullet I like H322 and both of my 25-20's have loved the load. For a lead bullet both of my 25-20s have liked the 70 grain Lyman cast GC bullet over a very light load of trail boss or titegroup. All these loads are straight out of the Hodgon manual that is available on line. I could not get either of my 1894cl marlins to shoot the Speer 75 grain bullet. A friend of mine has an older Marlin in 25-20 and it shoots the 75 grain Speer bullet very well. I mounted a scope on my best 25-20 and at 100 yards the 86 grain/H322 load shoots just a little over an inch. If I were limited to only one rifle, and components were readily available, I just might pick the 25-20.Contact me if I can help .

Re: 25-20 LOAD
Dan,
I have had great results with Lil' Gun. I load 7.0 gr behind a 75gr Speer. Velocity is around 1400fps.

Re: 25-20 LOAD
Dan,
Over the last ten years of shooting my 84 CL I have tried at least 50 different loads. Best load for silhouette I found is 7 grains of IRM 4227 with an 85 grain Meister bullet. I used H4227 until they stopped making it and to be honest I like the IMR better than the old H. I never got any jacket bullets to shoot in the short barrel CL although most of the loads I tried were petty fast. The 4227 load is not too fast, doesn't damage targets and is super sweet to shoot. Sold all my other bullets and now only shot this load. Hope this helps, remember, all barrels are different. Ask the guys who shoot at Aurora how much they prefer me to shoot the 357 instead of the 25-20 at our monthly matches. Still working on that 357 load but 4 grains of Tite Group with a 125 gr X-Treme bullet seems to be a winner so far. Send me a PM and I'll send you a many page article about 25-20 loads I have from a couple of years ago. Very educational.

Re: 25-20 LOAD
old thread resurrection
Dick, I would be most appreciative if you could forward me the article on 25/20 reloading.
I have just acquired a Marlin CL.
I plan on using jacketed bullets.
Thanks much,
Bill

Here is the most comprehensive data set on 25-20 that I've seen - http://www.marlinowners.com/forum/reloa ... aders.html
My favorite - the Speer 75r -is very hard to find now - might be a "seasonal run" and it isn't that season..whatever it is - they is hard to come by. I'm looking into buying cast bullets.
Michael
PS: My 1894CL 25-20 is the best shooting rifle I have. I'll keep it, even if I have to start casting my own bullets.

Re: 25-20 LOAD
After lots of testing I came to the exact load 40-65rl suggested. Same firearm model.

Are you using a "filler" with the load? I understand that 4227 is position sensitive and many people use Dacron or Pufflon to fill up the airspace - and eliminate the position-sensitive issue.
Thanks

Re: 25-20 LOAD
No filler. I raise the muzzle a bit and come down to the target. Seems to work ok.

Re: 25-20 LOAD
I shoot 8.5 grains 4227 pushing a 85 grain coated cast bullet from Missouri Bullet and have issues with taking animals or with powder location. Plus I only use a total of 3 minutes elevation from Chickens to rams. Chicken and pigs the same plus 1 for turkeys, plus 2 for rams.

But, what if the target is downhill?40-65rl wrote:No filler. I raise the muzzle a bit and come down to the target. Seems to work ok.
I think I'll stick to 4198 - no position issues.

C/P/T - all same, + 3 min for Rams

Re: 25-20 LOAD
Yep, I quit using Unique in mild 30/30 loads for the same reason... Some ranges don't allow the muzzle sighting plane to be above the horizon prior to taking a shot. I found a good 200+ FPS difference in velocity when going from muzzle up to muzzle down prior to the shot with Unique. Group sizes were OK with either technique, however the POI (and resulting sight settings) were significantly different between the 2.snaketail2 wrote:But, what if the target is downhill?40-65rl wrote:No filler.
