Identify this rifle?

Post by BrentD »

What is the rifle in this picture? This is a photo of the Dalton Gang that got shot up pretty bad, but what is the rifle?

Its forearm is very short and the action just looks big and odd to me somehow.

Looks like an 1886 that has a shortened and broken forearm.

Might be an 1894 Winchester, although as you said, the forearm looks short. The lever looks about right for an 1894.

Just realized that they were killed before the 1894 came out. OOPS!!

It is also possibly a Thin frame Marlin 1881.

Yeah, sort of a Marlin, sort of a Winchester, a little more of neither. Really odd to me.

According to "True West" historical website.. it is an 1886 Win. Don't know what the short fore end is all about?
