Is the Mossberg 464 up to the job

Centerfires, rimfires, pistol cartridges and everything in between.

Is the Mossberg 464 up to the job

Is it a wasted effort to use this rifle or go with Marlin?

I think any rifle is ok to get started. If thats the rifle you own go shoot it. Better to shoot matches with that rifle than not shoot matches until you get everything 'perfect'.
I buy all my guns from t-rex. He's a small arms dealer.

Good advice on shooting what you have. I don't own a Mossberg 464 but was thinking about one as I like the Winchester 94 styling. After researching more into the Mossberg I found out it only has an 18" barrel so that alone will disqualify it for me. The price on used Winchesters is a bit much. I know the Marlin is a long running brand and has a lot of loyal followers but I had a model 39a that wouldn't extract after about 100 rounds. Took it to the Marlin warranty repair folks in Paducah, KY and still wouldn't extract. I tried new extractors and it still wouldn't work. It found a new owner. The 336 is the one I will buy, found a pretty good deal at the local gun shop on a new one.
