30-30 Loads for High Power

Post by jbolt »

I'm looking for a load recommendation for a Win94 30-30 out to 500 meters. I'm thinking about abusing myself on the high power course shooting iron sights with the wrong gun until my high power rifle is ready. I will be single loading so pointy bullets are okay.

I shot mostly cast bullets but I have used the 180 gr. Speer in my .30-30 @ 500 meters.
I was using 36/H414/WLR and it shot very well at that distance. Muzzle velocity was close to 2,200 f.p.s. in my '94 Winchester Centennial's (1894-1994) 26" barrel.

My cast load uses a 205 gr. bullet with 35/H414/ WLP. Muzzle velocity is just shy of 2,100 f.p.s.

Have fun! :D

Thanks for the reply w30wcf. I shot the match yesterday. I took my best guess with what I had on hand and made up some loads with Horady 160 gr FTX, 33.7 gr Varget with Win LR primers. Never had a chance to test the loads other than to make sure they fired safely. My Win 94 has the 20" barrel. The come-up from chickens to rams was 62 clicks on my Marble tang sight (7-3/4 turns) I expected it to be a lot more so the loads shoot pretty flat.

End result: 1 chicken, 2 pigs, 2 turkeys (1 shot out od sequence so it didn't count) dang they're small in iron sights :D ,2 Rams (1 shot out of sequence AGAIN :)) and I rang the other so no ram points. It was a solid center shot in the behind but that sucker just stood there and wouldn't budge :(( . Total of 4 for the day.....with the wrong gun. :D

That was my first day on a full HP course and I had an increadable time.
