Front Sight Height

Post by K Danz »

I am fairly certain that this question has been answered somewhere on the forums, but since I have no patience looking for it, I was hoping someone here would have the answer handy.
I recently purchased a Cimarron 1873 in 32-20. I also have a Henry Bog Boy in 357.
I want to install a Marbles Tang Sight on both rifles and a fiber optic front. I was hoping to have both rear and front installed at the same time, but I can't figure out what height the front sight needs to be. Just trying to save 2 trips to the gunsmith.
I've looked at Marbles website with the chart that's on there, but it's confusing. It's almost like "...put on the rear sight, if you run out of elevation, get this front sight height...."
Using both guns for PCCLR.

If you can wait until tomorrow I will measure the height of the Marbles front sight on my 1873.
It is a Uberti as your Cimarron should be. The caliber is 44-40 but I don't believe that will matter.
With the midrange Marbles tang sight I have plenty of adjustment to go from 40 meter chickens in Pistol Caliber to 200 meter rams in CLA.

I have a Winchester 1873 Sporter in 357 Magnum and a Marble Arms tang sight. I decided to go back to the the 0.5" factory front sight. Titegroup burns so hot I was getting mirage around the low 0.26" front sight. Now I'm counting clicks down from the top of the tang sight instead of clicks up from the bottom. It was convenient, however, with a 0.26" front sight to just set chickens at the lowest tang sight setting with 1016 fps subsonic load. The load for rams is hotter at 1222 fps. 158 grain Hornady XTP.

I hope this helps.

Front sight is a 3/32" ivory bead.
I have been called to work early. I will give you the height later.

My front sight is. 530 height, 3/32 bead.

Again this is a 24" barrel, 44-40 Uberti 1873.

Plenty of range to go lower than 40 meter chickens and over 200 meter rams with the mid-range Marbles tang sight.

Hope that helps. Stay safe, stay healthy and hope to see you on the firing line again.

Use a modification of the old muzzleloader too high front and file down method.

Two zip ties around the muzzle. Opposing directions, curve right and left. Wrap them together with tape, so they stand straight up. Set the rear sight elevation to suit your desired head position. Using wire cutters trim the temporary front sight to zero. Measure its height & buy/install the front same height.

Marbles sell different size uprights.
They come with a standard but sell short, mid and long range.
Ran out of elevation on my "92 shooting big and slow bullets to 200 meters.
Ordered a mid range upright from Midway.
