Wanted...7MMBR Factory Riifle

Post by leadlauncher1 »

G,day to All.
I am looking to purchase a factory made rifle in 7mm BR if there is such a thing in this world. In Australia our rules are much stricter than NRA when it comes to Hunter class. It must be a rifle sold as standard over the counter. Any ideas?

cheers

leadlauncher1, this would have been better answered in the Highpower rifle section. But what the hell, we are already here :) .

To the best of my knowledge the only factory rifle ever produced for the 7mmBR was/is the Remington 40XB BR, a benchrest rifle. Even then I think it was a custom shop model. I could be wrong, but no company that I am aware of offers an "over the counter" hunting rifle in 7mmBR. The round is much more popular in the XP-100 pistol for handgun silhouette and hunting, though plenty of shooters have rebarreled M700's for rifle silhouette.

If you are really hung up on a 7mm/.284 caliber (like me) the 7-08 Rem. can be handloaded to perform like the BR. You can load it light, medium, or heavy. It is a very flexible cartridge. There are several manufacturers that offer plenty of models of 7-08 hunting rifles. Remington alone has 13 models in 7-08.

Several of us on this site still swear by the 7-08's superior performance on silhouette steel, including a few of your countrymen down under. :)

Keep looking. I think that Rem. built a few 7BR's in there model 7. I was looking for one and neveer found one. Maybe it is just a figment of my immagination but I thought they built some. Good luck. Bob may have the answer by going with a 7-08. He is the man and should know about the 7-08's loading. Good luck, Tom.

Hey there Tom....long time no see, hear or read! I had to look up M7 history. You may be a lot older and grey before you find a seven in 7BR. None listed unless maybe a special distributer run was made. See you in June.....you shooting?

leadlauncher, go with a 260 Rem. Remington started making them in 1997 and I won the NRA Hunting rifle class Championship with it the same year.
Best caliber ever for silhouettes as far as I am concerned. The original 260 Rem rifles had a synthetic stocks, detachable mags and SS actions. A lot of shooters used them before the last Hunting rifle rules changed.

If they let you replace barrels I have a brand new 24" Rem 700 hunter contoured SM SS Shilen threaded and chambered in 260 Rem I never put on a rifle that I am willing to sell.

The 7mm BR was a Remington custom shop item that was only available in the model 7. The only one I ever actually saw was in the Mannlicher stock version, although if I recall correctly they were available in other stock styles also. A nice little rifle but they sold for around a $1000 at a time when an off the shelf 700 could be had for around $300. They of course would be too light to be a satisfactory silhouette rifle.

Take lone ringers advice and go with a 260 for a hunter class rifle, Remington made them as he described, also they were available in the stainless version with the injection molded stock in a BDL configuration (hinged floorplate), I have owned at least three in that configuration, the good thing about them was they had a factory 24 inch barrel. I have also seen some special runs of them with a matte finish, injection molded stock and in an ADL configuration (blind magazine).

If you cannot get your hancs on one of those consider a factory Rem 700 with a 24 inch barrel in 243 and use the Hornady 105 A-Max bullets. With a top-end load of H4895 it will reliably take over rams unless they are extremely hard set or the rails are loose.

When you go back to LL's dilema he is looking to get a factory produced hunting rifle per his countries rules. Rebarreling to .260 might be an option. When was the last time you saw a stock .260 for sale on Gunbroker or any of the other gun trade websites? Heck, you cant even buy a new Remington 700 in .260 thanks to the narrow minded thinking of the Remington marketing dept. I still can not under stand why they dont promote THEIR OWN darn good cartridge.

When I was in Auckland NZ last year I checked out two of the larger gunshops in town. Both new and used 7-08's were common on the racks, as common as .270's, 06's and 7mags here in the US. I would think that leadlauncher1 should easily be able get his hands on a new or used M700 in 7-08 in Australia.

Another option to consider is the 6.5 x 55. There should be plenty to choose from down there.

I just looked at Rugers website. They are offering an M77R in 6.5 Creedmoor #17168... 7lbs...26" blue barrel....1-8 twist...oal 46" Looks to me that this one would be silhouette ready right out of the box.

Hi Bob. I have been trying to shoot but my back doesn't want to cooperiate. I loaded up 300 rounds for the old 260 so I will be ready ammo wise. I have been shooting the 6Br and I may just shoot it. It doesn't kick and it really shoots. Good to hear you are going to make it to our state shoot. The range is melting off and we may shoot outside this months shoot.
In my experiance I have lost way more rams with my 260 with 139 gr and 142gr bullets than I ever lost shooting a 7mmIHMSA with 168 or 175gr bullets. In one 80 shot state shoot I lost 5 rams. Not a good time for them to not fall. I think the recoil was very simmiar in both rifles. I have a 6x47 that shoots 115 gr Bergers very well I may shoot.
Good luck on finding a 7br factory rifle. Tom Spriggs

Gentlemen, G'day from Down Under and thank you very much for your answers to my search for the 7mmbr. My prime reason for wanting one is because I am 62 with weak bones and am recoil shy. I shoot a Weatherby Vanguard actioned 7BR in Silhouette rifle class and a Tikka T3 in .260 Remington in Hunter class. I find that the 7BR with 29 grains of 2206H (your H4350) has less felt recoil than the .260., and also have no problems knocking stuff over because I also use 162 Amax all the way through. My idea is that if I could find this factory rifle in 7BR, I coould also use it for Hunter class. Thank you and good shooting to you.

cheers
