Bedding my Remington 700

More expensive to feed, but worth it.

Bedding my Remington 700

Post by DavidABQ »

I bedded my Remington 700 last night and while I have not tried to separate the action from the stock I am concerned it is glued together.

How can a person desperate a glued together Remington? Perhaps I am worried about nothing but I have a bad feeling.

I'd start by leaving the rifle in the freezer overnight and then trying to knock it loose while it's still cold.

Thanks, hopefully it will come apart tonight but it seems like there was a lot of bedding compound oozing out of everywhere and I may not have put release agent everywhere the stuff oozed from.

I will keep the freezer idea in mind if it is glued together.

Thank you.

I always put release agent on the action before I glass bed it. I have done at least 10 and never had a problem.

Jerry,
I used release agent, I am not sure used enough and in the correct places.

10 firearms, you are rather experienced, have you glued any together?

I didn't know they made that stuff. I used the wax like stuff that came in the kit.

Thank you. I will remember it for next time.

A heat gun will get it to release unless it becomes mechanically locked, then you will have to mill it out. There are some f-class shooters that glue in their actions, I'm sure they aren't the only ones.

WhooHooo! It came apart but not without a little drama. The follower, mine is a BDL, got some bedding compound on it and the trigger guard. The were stuck a short period but everything came apart.

That is the good news, the bad news is I adjusted the front pillar a tad on the long side so I have like only 2 threads holding it to the receiver. I will order a rear action screw and shorten it work properly.

Tomorrow I clean up the excess bedding compound and hopefully remember how to attach the trigger back to the action.

Thank you everyone.

The action screw on a Rem is a standard 1/4 dia. Most Ace stores have a good selection. If you cut one off, put the nut on first so after you cut the screw you chase the threads when you take the nut off.

I have not ever glued one together but some come apart hard. I always tape the back side of the recoil lug so after it comes apart it will go back together easier. That small space masking tape leaves making assembly later easy.
