More expensive to feed, but worth it.

Custom actions

Post by fwt1712 »

I'm looking to build a heavy gun using a custom action. On checking the prices of new and used Rem700 (plus adding in blueprinting costs) it seems that a custom is going to be little more. So, does anyone have any advice or suggestions on what to look for. I have decided on a McMillan Anschutz pattern (not thumbhole) so this may limit what will fit. Thanks Nigel.

I'm using a 400X from Lawton.

I've only had it for about a month now, but so far I'm really happy with it. It's the smoothest operating bolt I've ever handled. Be sure to include their 20 MOA scope base with the action. They make both the Picatiny and Kelby style. I got the Kelby on the recommendation on my gunsmith.

Mine is mated to a Krieger barrel chambered in 6.5x47 Lapua. With both the 108 and 139 grain Lapua Scenars, I'm getting 100 yard groups in the range of .22 to .26.

The Stiller Predator is also highly recommended, but from what I've heard they are severely backlogged.

I have had a Stiller Tac 30 on order for awhile now but not for a silhouette build. I would look at the Remmy clone actions from Stiller, Lawton, Jim Borden, and others.

I have BAT actions on my Benchrest guns and just love them. A smaller BAT would be super nice on a Silhouette rig albeit a lot of overkill for a 26" barrel that is shot off hand in a 10lb 2 oz gun.

Good luck with your choice.
