quickload for 6.5TCU

Post by Varn »

Can anyone with quickload get me results for CFE 223 and Varget for 140's and 123'? This is for a 6.5TCU with 24" barrel. Thank you. Mark

Mark, I would recommend IMR 8208 as Varget is too slow. Also 130's are about as heavy as you should go. I'll see if I can get a load for you. The Norma 130's are a great bullet with a high BC for the Rams. 107's work fine for the first 3 animals.

Don't forget Sierra now has a 6.5 130gr. polymer tipped match king. I got some to try but haven't had a chance to shoot them yet.

I have Norma's 130gr bullets. I can give them a try. I'm going to try using 139 to 142 bullets for rams. And using 123's for c-p-t. Or maybe reduced loads with the same 140's because the gun is throated for them. I've read all of Dan Theodore's posts on the 6.5tcu. He used N140 and N150. I'm going to try CFE223, Benchmark and Varget because I have them on hand.

I understand, I shoot a 6.5 Grendel and I've found that with cartridges that are a little shy of enough capacity that it is better on Rams driving a medium bullet well, than trying to horsepower a heavy bullet for Rams. Powders like v133 or H4895 or IMR 8208 are ideal. If you want to use a full capacity load of a slow powder, use IMR 4320. It is a sleeper powder slightly slower than Varget, but an even smaller grain size.
I'll still look up some numbers for you when I can.

It's too bad there doesn't seem to be any 2520 around. That stuff measures like a dream and in a small case like the tcu would burn very efficiently. If you come across some it would be worth the try to get some loads together with it.

This sounds like a very fun project. Please relay your rifle build and experience with the 6.5 tcu in a rifle. I have thought about having that very rifle built for my wife and grandson to shoot.

Glen Ring, the rifle was built by Mark Pharr. Remington 700 ADL in what appears to be an SPS stock. Not bedded at this point. Just free floated. Obermeyer barrel #3 contour 1-8 twist. 5R rifling. Defiance recoil lug. Factory trigger at 2.5 lbs. Burris signature rings and 36x Leupold. CFE 223 is very smoky of all things. With a 140 SST I have got 2500fps with CFE 223 and 2400fps with Varget. 143 ELD-x and CFE 223 I got 2400fps. With a 120 A-MAX I got 2500fps with Benchmark. More to come,

I tried a 7 TCU for awhile and gave up. The little case is just too finicky with the heavy loads. I'd think I had it figured out at 200 yd range then 500 m showed me I was no where close.

I had it reamed to 7mm IHMSA, an old cartridge very similar to 6.5x47, and I found peace. I could lob 162 A-max at 2300 fps or juice them up to 7-08 velocity. You can't do that with the tiny TCU.

I won't be at Nationals this year. Not enough vacation time.

I'll be shooting my first ever HP silhouette match there this year. I'm sorry you can't make it. Please post any results you have with your rig. This is the same rig I was thinking of as a project this winter.

My results so far are 25.5gr of Benchmark and a 123 Sierra at 2475 fps to fireform with and shoot matches. My Ram load is 143 ELD-X and CFE 223. at 2390 fps. Going to shoot a match with it on Sat and see how it performs on Rams.

Mark, I ran these last eve. Quickload shows a max pressure of 55,114psi for the 6.5TCU.
123 Sierra HPBT
26 grains of CFE223, 53,000psi, 2,450fps
24.5 grains of Varget, 54,000psi, 2,400fps
140 Sierra HPBT
25 grains of CFE223, 53,500psi, 2,300fps
23.5 grains of Varget, 54,500psi, 2,260fps
All in a 24" barrel. Sorry I forgot the load density---so not sure how full the cases will be with these charges. Quickload has a lot of variables, so be safe and cautious and work up to these. The psi numbers are rounded up. Plus, these loads are near the 55,114psi max and from what I saw, one tenth of a grain raises pressures noticeably. Cool cartridge---looks like accurate powder measuring is a must---best of luck with it.
