Results of the April matches, BPCR and the inaugural 22BPCR match.
An April Weekend at Ridgway
The inaugural 22BPCR match on the new 200m silhouette range was held this past Saturday followed by the BPCR match on Sunday.
Lots of effort has gone into building a nice 200m silhouette range to handle 22BPCR, big-bore lever-gun and any other 200m silhouette matches. All new targets and many positions (though I did not count them - perhaps 10, like on the BPCR range). Lots of dirt moved with a new cover. Once the grass grows it will be a great range.
14 shooters stepped to the line for the inaugural match with cloudy skys, coolish (mid-50s) temps and some breezes that required attention on turkeys & rams.
As 22BPCR is new to the range,, more than half of the shooters were unclassified, which did not keep them from posting some decent scores. We shot 2-relays and the match took less than 2 hours. New books were issued to the competitors and everyone had a great time. There were some ‘teething problems’ with the rails, but with two more matches before July’s 2-day Eastern Regional the kinks should be worked out.
Congratulations to Brian Chilson on his nice 34, followed by yours truly with a 27 and Dave Wiese with another 27 in scope (decided by chicken count). John Bly led the pack in irons. The number of shooters will also increase once the word is out about how much fun we have shooting 22BPCR and the competing 1000yd semi-annual gong match (also held this Saturday) is not being shot.
Our thanks to the Ridgway Rifle Club for the new 22BPCR range, to Rich Paquette for coming down from Vermont to organize and run the 22BPCR matches and to Sam Marshall for calling the line. Much appreciated by all.

After a nice Saturday afternoon at the 22BPCR match (and a nice dinner at Luigi’s for some and, hopefully, a good night’s sleep for all) Sunday dawned cool (low 40s) and damp (a few small puddles to walk around) after rain overnight. Thankfully, we had no more rain to speak of during the BPCR match.
Several of the folks who shot the nearby 1000yd gong shoot in Saturday joined in the fun as 27 of us came to the line at 9 a.m.
However, the nearly calm breeze during most of the 1st two relays disappeared and the rest of the match was shot with what was mostly a headwind that varied from 9 o’clock to 1 o’clock and often had use waiting out 30-90 second-long gusts. Being almost totally overcast (think we saw blue sky but twice for a very few minutes between the clouds) and cool (mid-50s with a cutting, wet-feeling wind in our face) there was zero mirage to read and the flags were every bit as confused as were the spotters on wind calls.
Unfortunately for all, we started on chickens, pigs and turkeys, so no one shot rams until the wind had reared its ugly head. As is reflected in the scores, there was only one 9 and two 8s for rams and no 10s for rams or turkeys and only a few for pigs. A testy day for spotters and shooters and the best one could hope for was that the wind was consistent once they were shooting the ‘long’ animals. Even the pigs proved a challenge if shooting after about 10 a.m. Enough of a breeze that one was moved around in off-hand with the gusts.
The match went quite quickly and we were finished by shortly after 2 p.m. Guns were cleaned and put away, libations opened and we gathered in the range-house for award presentations.
Congratulations to Dave Heeter and his fine 29 as the MW in Irons, followed closely by Rudy Kovasevich with a 28 and Brian Betts with a 26.
In Scope, Brian Chilson was the MW with a 27 (won on chicken count) over John Bly’s 27, followed by Bob Clipp with a 26.
Fine shooting in these conditions by all the winners.
And, there were three new shooters (who shot very well) joining us along with another three or four “observers” who plan to join in the fun at the next match. Am sure the weather will be more ‘friendly’ in May and we should have a great gathering as we all want to get in some quality ‘range time’ prior to July’s BPCR Nationals.
The range was in very good condition and we should have a full set of swingers for all 10 positions as soon as Ridgway folks can get to setting them. Additional RV sites have been added with electrical service as well as a dump station.
If you are looking for a great venue to shoot BPCR & 22BPCR come join in the fun at the Ridgway Rifle Club, which is doing a great job of making an excellent range even better.
As above, our thanks to the RRC, to Kevin Burge for running the match, Sam Marshall for calling the line and Craig Duncan for his able assistance. Hope to see everyone at the May match.

Hello Folks,

Our June matches, 22 BPCR and Black Powder Silhouette will take place on 6/26 and 6/27.

22 BPCR will be a 40 shot match on the 26th.
The range will be open for practice till noon.

Black Power will also be a 40 shot match on the 27th.
The high power range will be open for practice Friday and Saturday until noon.
We have to close the high power range while the 22 match is underway for the safety of our target setters.

This will be the last club match before the Nationals in July.

See you at Ridgway!

Craig
