Wind Effects

Post by remlilja »

I was wondering how much a shooters score varies because of wind.. I guess Im trying to say: How many animals will you hit on a nice day with not so much wind, than say a really windy day?

I shot a 23 the other day and it was calm with almost no wind, and today I shot 16 with a lot of wind (somewhere around 15mph -/+ 5). For more experienced shooters do the results vary as much?

Depending on which direction the wind is coming from, if it is cross wind the effect will be greater than if it is in your face or at your back. No solid rule but usually those who have achieved master status don't lose as many to wind as to lower ranked shooters. Learning how to shoot in the wind is one reason they got that ranking to start with. A B shooter may loose even a larger precetage than you do. A good spotter is invaluable when learning to shoot in the wind. The higher the ranking the more one will want that spotter. "tight groups"!

If the wind is steady and NOT blowing you around, you can dial in the adjustment for it. If it is blowing you around, all you are doing is learning BAD habits by shooting in a strong wind. Baaaaaaaaaaaad habits. You will start jerking the trigger when you see a good sight picture.

Back to your question, I have seen AAA and master shooters win matches with scores of 12.
